To my fellow cyclists/triathletes:

Would a standard trunk-mounted bike rack hang safely off the rear of a 997? The gaps are definitely wide enough to handle the clips. Two on top, two on side, two on the bottom. Looks like it would work. Crazy thought?

Even with the spoiler, aren't you able to set many of the newer racks so that there would be adequate clearance? This shouldn't impact the security of any of the straps and clips.

Do it right with the roof rack system. I cant stand those strappy trunk racks, especially on a 911.

I've thought about this myself. I think it would work, just look around for one where the straps and clearance are correctly placed. I don't love the strappy racks myself, but I think they're better for very occasional use (and long trips) than roof racks. (easier to put on, less drag and wind noise).

The proper way to carry a bike in an 11 is to mount it on PAG's roof mounting system - see HERE. I would still not do it.

I looked at a new GT3 at the dealer last night. I don't know if this was true in previous versions, but the new GT3 does NOT have the little mounting doors on the roof for the Porsche roof rack. It appears that there is no *no* way to mount a roof rack on the new GT3, unless you're willing to drill holes in the roof...

Is that really an issue? how often would any 911 driver, let alone a GT3 driver, want to carry a bike? if you can afford a new GT3, pay some slacky to drive the bike to oyur destination baby....don't be cheap!...

Exactly my thinking. I had the PAG roof rack for my 996. It worked but it was pricey, noisy (tough to find a wind fairing that fit) and ugly. Just want this as an occasional option. Thanks.

Proper, why? In my mind, there is nothing proper about PAG's decision to hire Thule to private label a roof rack to mark up and sell thru dealers at an exorbitant price. Back to the original question, help me understand why the trunk mount won't work.

Hmmm...drilling holes in the roof? That sounds intriguing. Yet...maybe not. On the Mk1 GT3 I am pretty sure there are roof mounts. I just REALLY don't want a roof rack. I KNEW I should have bought the Aztek instead. Damn.

As you know, 911 drivers do all sorts of strange things, including wanting to carry their bikes in their favorite ride. But I do like your idea about finding, what was that?, a "slacky?" Please tell me the best place to find slackies. Thank you!

Ha Slacky's can typically be found lurking either a) in bars with darkened windows around 2:20 in the afternoon on most days, or b) standing in front of a home depot on a saturday morning.

A better consideration is having a trailer hitch type carrier mount installed under the rear of the car. I've seen them on other sports cars, the square tube receivers. The only tricky part is the custom design and build and installation of the receiver onto the car. Ideally it would have a pin that can be pulled to remove the majority of the receiver so when its not needed, nothing shows below the bumper cover. Now how that works with the rear engined 911's is another issue.
