The SmartTop control module is common across the 996 and 997 lines (pretty close) and you might consider going to te manufacturer and solicite their interest in supporting a group buy. Then place messages on the respective forums soliciting interest in such a buy. You should be able to save about $100 off the price,--worth a try!

Whenever I talk to cab owners, I always ask if they have a SmarTop. I'm amazed at how many of them that are unaware of the SmarTop. If I ever get another cab, it would be the first thing I'd do to it. IMO, a cab isn't complete without one. Because of the OP's great price, I almost bought his SmarTop just in case I needed one some day!

I got back this evening from being out of town. Nugget's package was awaiting me. The SmartTop was securely packed without any visible scratches or blemishes. I hope to install it next weekend.

Thank you Nugget for an easy transaction, and best wishes for the new ride!

What is a Smarttop? Or a better question -- what does it do that the car doesn't that makes it a worthwhile purchase?

I installed the SmartTop earlier today. The instructions on the mods4cars.com vendor website together with ronmart's posting on Rennlist made the installation very simple. I spent about 10 minutes fussing with the connector out of caution, and it took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to enable/disable the unit. Once I figured out how to turn it on, configuring the settings was easy.

For now, I've configured it for all the factory default settings, except no horn chirp when locking/unlocking with the key - while the noise is helpful to confirm the operation, I find it slightly annoying and want to minimize the disturbance to those around me.

My thanks again to Nugget for a great transaction!

If you have a cabriolet the Smart Top allows you to remotely (via the key) raise or lower the top, and a bunch of other things. (E.g., turn on the headlights, lower the windows differently (and remotely) and add a beep of the horn for locking confirmation. Do a search within the 997 forum for more details a photo (gif) of one in action that I posted.

In case anyone is interested, but the $500 price has scared you away, the manufacturer has just reduced the price from $500 to $400, and there's a GB going on over at planetporsche.net which is pretty close to getting enough people to get and additional 20% off. So, for $320, given all the functionality this gizmo adds, it seems like a worthwhile purchase...

There's also the RemoteKEY for Coupes - I signed up for that on the group buy - it adds 3 functions I don't have - @ $250 or so, seems useful.

The RemoteKey for coupes is a great addition. Had one on my 06 and added one on my 09...missed the group buy, but got it anyway.. a must have.

Got my RemoteKey installed - nice. Bummer to have to pay $250 for a few options that should/could apparently easily be part of the car in the first place, but glad they can be added. Beep on lock and one-click passenger window up make it worth it. The Window/up/down on lock/unlock, not sure - could be handy.

Really odd how high-jacking only two wires can do all that.

If anyone needs one for a 997 coupe. I have a brand new SmartTop unopened that I had purchased for my 987. I am asking $200 shipped.
PM me if interested.
