Default My 10 seconds (or less) of exhiliration with launch control

After my test drive of the S the other weekend, I've become obsessed with upgrading my current C2 to a C2S or T4S. Today, I was bored at work and ventured to the dealer to check it out. Anyways, the salesguy said would I like to test drive one. Of course, I couldn’t turn and him down and say no. So, I hopped in a Carrera S with PDK and sports chrono.

The sports chrono now has two modes: Sport and Sport Plus. Remember the scene in Spinal Tap when the guy’s talking about Amps with volume dials that go to 11? Well, Sports Plus is like an 11. The best part is that the PDK in Sports Plus Mode has “Launch Control”. At a full-stop, you put foot on brake, jam on the accelerator, wait for a beep (that signals Launch Control is engaged), release the brake and keep the accelerator pressed. You then take-off in the most exhilarating ride of your life…at least that’s what the salesman said.

So, we drive up the West Side Highway in Manhattan to the Boat Basin exit. Upon reentry to the West Side Highway, I attempt launch control. With the bejesus scared out of me, I inadvertently lightly took my foot off the accelerator as I started to go and found myself merely accelerating (not launching) down the highway really fast. I thought the acceleration was still cool but the salesman said I whimped out.

However, I had one more chance. At the corner of 28th Street and West Side Highway, I stopped and faced an open street from WSH to 12th Avenue on 28th Street. So, I repeated the steps. And this is what happened:

1. In one mere block, I was able to go from complete stop to 70mph (!!!) and back to a complete stop. (I only recall glancing down once as I was braking and seeing 64mph but the salesman said he saw a 7 as first digit but he wasn’t sure what the second digit was because he was holding on for dear life.

2. I was both frightened and giggling at the same time.

Oh, I really like the T4S. What a cool feeling inside that car.

What is a "T4S?" Is that a Targa? (That's a non-standard nomenclature).

Whether standard nomenclature or not, many people use T4S as short hand for Targa 4S. Seems consistent with using C4S for the coupe.

Sounds like you should consider a T4S with PDK and Sport Chrono Plus.

Would say the salesperson qualifies for "salesperson of the year"!

I'll have to remind myself not to buy any T4S demo cars from manhattan dealerships.

Great story and surprisingly well written for a escaped Fenway fan hiding out in Manhattan!

NS!

Here's what the Technik 997 Doc says:

Launch Control (racing start function)
Stress on components increases significantly when driving off at maximum
acceleration in comparison with driving off “normally”. In addition, there is a high
temperature burden on the components in the clutches. To protect the components
in this case, this function is disabled for a distance of 1.5 miles (2,5 km)
after a racing start. During the 1.5 miles (2,5 km) drive, the clutches are cooled
with the maximum cooling volume flow.
Saleman of the year indeed - as long as he's not selling me that car.

I went to the Mooresville (NC) 1/8 mile drag strip today to test out the launch control feature on my 2009 C4S w/PDK and SC. I had zero drag strip experience prior to this... but here are the results:

Run 1 Run 2
Reaction 0.600 0.869
I1 1.805 1.757
I2 5.155 5.102

Elapsed Time 7.916 7.859
MPH 89.271 89.422

I assume my reaction time is poor. I don't know what the I1 and I2 marks are. Very consistent times though. The launch was very controlled, no drama other than the g-force on my head. It was fun. Next time I will have my wife take a video for posting.

I can't until break in is over before trying launch control on my C2S. I have been told it will "take your breath away."

Two comments:

1 - Recently people went to jail for posting such exploits.

2 - No one should buy a 997.2 PDK w/ SC out the lot.
