Changing Oil Before Sitting All Winter
Hello All,
What are your thoughts on changing the oil before my 997
sits all winter (except for a few intermittent drives, weather
permitting)?
Some say before, others say change it in the Spring.

interesting, hadn't heard of "acid buildup" before, but this 1965 issue of popular science discusses it: http://books.google.com/books?id=LSY...20acid&f=false

The rule is to always change it BEFORE you park it for awhile. Imagine if you will, moisture in the engine oil, or in the brake reservoir,--being allowed to sit and be in contact next to untreated steel. Do beforehand to ensure proper protection. In the Spring the car will be ready to go.
Also, consider putting in a fuel stabilizer. Fuel is the bigger issue, as it is formulated for certain climatic conditions, and if parked for some time, loses much of its potency.

That's another good issue---should you fill the fuel tank completely
up for the winter or leave it closer to empy?

I would set up the battery maintainer if the car is going to sit for days at a time.

why wait for dry, sunny days? drive the thing all winter and you won't need to worry about it.
BUT, get some all season tires. those high perf summer tires are like driving on roller skates when it's cold out.

I am wondering......would it be better to stabilize the fuel for the winter and leave the old oil in the car? Does it make sense to wait until Spring and use the entire tank of stabilized fuel and then change the oil?
