Why are 997's so cheap?
I just started looking at 911s and thought I would buy a last gen 911 or 964. As I am searching for cars, it seems like there are nearly as many 1999 and 2000 model year 997's out there with around 100,000 miles for about the same price. What is the deal? Are there a bunch of troublesome 997's out there? Is a major service required at 100,000 miles? I would expect a modern car to go well beyond 100,000 miles without a major service other timing belt.

In response to the current economic situation, Porsche has aggressively ramped up promotions and kickbacks on new cars in an effort to move inventory and keep their dealer networks solvent. This has compressed used car prices tremendously because new car sales are trimming the top end off of what would otherwise have been a brisk used car marketplace.
Most folks shopping for a lightly used 997 are much better off buying a brand new one right now. If you're a seller you've got to lower your price quite a lot to compete.
It sucks as a seller, but it's a great time to be a buyer.
Edit: 996s are always cheap because nobody wants 'em.

My indy loaths the 1999 996's,so I guess it goes beyond style.
However . . . the 996 Turbo's are a really good value/performance right now. No IMS bearing to worry about.
I was not a fan of the 996 looks. I was quite impressed when they went back a little more classic with the 997, and bought one.
