Default Dumb question: what is redline on C2S?

997.1 if it makes a difference.

7300, per the workshop manual. (Non-X51) (BTW, it's not a dumb question. Porsche doesn't really advertise the redline much anymore. But they do show you where the maximum or peak torque area is for the engine)

ok, based on your answer, i am now more confused, but recognize that its not a dumb question.....

on the tach....
7k line is black
7.2k line is red
7.4k line is red
7.6k line is red
7.8k line is red
8k line is red

but redline is actually 7.3?

I think that in the 997.1 the redline is officially 7.2kRPM and that is the first tick marked red.

On the 997.2 the redline is 7.5kRPM and 7.4k, the closest tick below that is marked red.

I took my '05 C2S to the track for the first time this weekend and noticed that it seemed to be just a little after the 7.2k tick when the rev limiter kick'd in ... that would agree with 7.3k. NB the Technik documents states that the "cutoff" is at 7.3k and peak power at 6.6k.

Did you happen to notice when you are in "sport" mode there's a very hard, almost harsh cutoff with the rev limiter, while in normal mode the cutoff is much softer?

I believe the 05 - 08 S non X51 is 7200 and the X51 cars 7400.

I didn't notice the difference but then I wasn't looking for it - I tried not to get in the rev limiter at all but alas it happened once or twice ... it always felt bad ... I did notice that while the redline was marked at 7.2k, it was just a bit after (eg. agrees with docs saying 7.3k) - whereas on my Boxster it would limit right at the rev limiter mark wherever that was.

FWIW, if peak is in the 6600-6700 range, then shift up around 6800-7k. There's little benefit if any from stressing out the internals by going over 7k in these motors, especially in the taller gears 4 & 5th....

The workshop manual is clear about this. 7300. This is a bit odd because the tach clearly has the 7200 mark in red, but it is 7300. The X-51 is probably 7400--just don't remember, but it is slightly higher.

Keep in mind that although it seems like little is to be gained by going above 6600 rpm (peak HP) you have to keep in mind that when you up-shift, the rpms drop with that next higher gear and you want to keep the subsequent rpms in a reasonable power production area. If you shift at 6600 the rpm in the next higher gear may be too low and then you aren't staying 'on the cam.'

Remeber what they say about dumb questions. It's interesting how hard it is to find the 997 redline in their published data. It's a very reasonable question. I had to look in several places. I thought I knew it to be 7300 but I wanted to double check my answer before I responded. The 996 sales material quotes 7300 as their readline. (They didn't go back down) The 997 Official Workshop Manual cites 7300 as redline, and where cutoff begins.

For those with the Sport chronometers, the cutoff is much more severe on them when in Sport. It's one of the features of the Sports Chrono. Read up sometime on the Sports Chrono features.
