This is a REALLY LAME effort by Porsche: take a Boxster S, add some built-in speedster humps, lob off some weight by eliminating A/C, radio, door handles (!!), add a deft Pontiac Solstice rag top that is useless in inclement weather, add 10h.p. and call it a "third" Boxster line. I think NOT ! There is NOTHING about this car that would cause me to remotely want it.

Web Special says base price will only be ~$3k above the Boxster S. For that you get:
1. LSD
2. 20mm lower/stiffer suspension
3. wider & lighter 19" wheels
4. 176 lbs less curb weight
5. 7,200 rpm redline Cayman S engine, rather than 6,800 rpm detuned version in normal Boxster S
6. Interior & exterior appearance package
7. Sport-Bucket seats (normally a $3k option)

And yet some people hate it already! I guess that just proves it's a niche product.

I'd take it over a regular Boxster S in a heartbeat... I guess I'm "special."

+1. I get it and love it. I saw the pics and info this morning at my Porsche dealer. Only problem for me is at 6'5 I do not fit in a boxster.

A true enthusiasts car. PCCB!!! DFI. Sport Exhaust. LSD. Super low weight.

This car would be a TERROR on the track.

This is sooo cool and I want one BAD!

I get it, and this makes perfect sense for anyone who loves to drive hard and well. Bravo Porsche I say.

Big problem: this is a FAR BETTER value proposition than the new GT3RS...what to do what to do...

Sigh...

I seriously doubt that you will see any of the cars on the dealers showrooms in its original "stripped" config with sport buckets, unless launch cars are forced on dealers....

Niche car....track guys and autoX guys will love it. I actually think it is awesome...pure enthusist sports car. If you want creature comforts, Porsche already has that with the Boxster and Boxster S.

I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat if I was in the market. I'm lucky enough to live in S. CA and the lack of a top and A/C and all that crap means nothing to me. Hell... I rarely listen to the radio in my 997S because I prefer to listen to the exhaust

Good on you Porsche.
+1 Awesome car IMHO. Porsche needs to do this more often....

This thing was built with the future in mind. In 20 years, it will be collectible because of its rarity and its true-to-type design. The fact that it's totally impractical means only that very few will sell, furthering this goal.

And it looks like a Toyota MR/2 from behind.

Wow!

273 ft. lbs. torque. 320 bhp. No electric bling. No A/C.

This is a "enthusiast" Porsche.

Just wonder why not center locks?

This thing (which I like) harks back to the RS America. My first new 911 was a 1993 RS America. It was a lightened up C2; had RS door panels and pulls, no rear seats (in 1993; in '94 they were available), no power mirrors, fabric sport seats, sport suspension, and other suspension mods. There were only four options available: LSD, Air conditioning, radio, and electric sunroof (mine had all but the radio option).

This is one I really wish I had kept. And it has become a collector's item of sorts.

We are going to see a lot more Special Editions in the near future to generate interest in niche markets where the base product has become stale ...

This is not a Special Edition, of limited numbers, but rather a "regular" model.
The "GT3" of the Boxster range I would think.
