Apple car play
Hi everyone.
I’m interested in installing apple CarPlay in my 2005 997S. Has anyone upgraded their head units to utilize CarPlay?
Any and all insight is appreciated. Thanks very much!

I did a couple months ago. Put in a Alpine 107, it has wireless car play, which I really like. I have a 2007 C2S with Bose so I needed the fiber optic ‘decoder’ too. Got the whole thing from Crutchfield, took me about 3 hours to install taking my time. Some soldering required for the wiring harness but not complex.
You can get a cheaper decoder from Amazon and save $100 or so, but good luck figuring out the wiring if you don’t know what you are doing, and it will probably lose some of the functionality like the option for a backup camera from what I can tell.

I just bought a 2009 997.2 C2S recently that has the Pioneer AVIC-8200N. It's my first 911 so I don't have any experience with the stock OEM unit, but I have Apple CarPlay in my daily driver (Nissan) and I got spoiled so I was happy when I saw he had recently had it installed along with the a rear camera. Works fantastic with my iPhone X.

My 997.1 car came with an aftermarket head unit from ~2012. I just swapped in one of the new Pioneer units with wireless CarPlay. Go wireless, 100%.
I have a short commute and I would otherwise not bother to plug my phone into anything before pulling out of the driveway. But with wireless CarPlay, my laziness is subverted and everything instantly connects, whatever song or podcast I was just listening to when I parked the car is queued up and my short commute is instantly more enjoyable.
There are many great CarPlay features, but that particular reason above is why I really enjoy the wireless version specifically. If I installed a wired CarPlay solution, I would likely still be listening to long commercial blocks on the radio when heading to work or running errands, none the wiser.
