for the DE'ers...do you "track"? do you "DE"?
what do you tell people when they ask?
i say: i track my car. "oh so you race??" no, it's called driver education and we are on a track/road course learning skills and how to drive at speed. "oh so youre out there alone?" no, people of same skill level are all out on the track at same time, passing, etc. "oh so it's racing." aaaarrrrgggghhhh!
i guess only the people who do it, understand. :P

I always say track and leave it in their court if they want to know more. If they ask more I say it isn't a race against time, just doing laps and we have an instructor in the car to help us.

I refer to my track events as DE's. I will tell anyone that listens that DE's are driving schools focused on teaching high performance driving skills that are applicable to both track and street driving. If they are still listening I urge them (and their teenage son or daughter) to sign up for a HPDE.

After you get experienced enough and drive solo, it is more than training... It is like an unofficial racing, without timing (unfortunately), or anyone winning. I always race myself, not others.

I tell them the main difference between DE and racing (aside, of course, from no timing) is no one passes unless given a signal. Other than that, let's face it, we're all going as fast as our skill level allows. Oh, and trying to catch the guys ahead and keeping ahead of the guys behind.

Most people that have heard about my DE experience automatically say "Race" (ie: "Ron, I hear you race your Porsche...") I correct them that it's HPDE and go into the personal growth aspect. I'll never open with anything other than saying it's HPDE and never say racing other than to correct somebody. It's not complicated and I never tire of talking about this hobby and enjoy going into the skill development aspect, which gets the other party talking about how kids these days aren't taught "real" driving skills and how great it is my kids DE to learn vehicle dynamics, etc.

I say that I'm learning to drive my car on the track. Then I have to say "No. The track has lots of turns. Many of which go right."
When I head off to a DE I often say that I'm headed to "Racing camp." It implies learning and modesty.
When the neighbor kids ask I tell them that I didn't win but I did better than last time.
