Anyone really use the speedometer?
OK, after 2.5 years of driving my Cab S, I realized I have almost never used the traditional, non-digital speedometer gauge. I always glance at the digital speedometer.
Maybe blasphemous, but is the traditional speedo gauge destined to be passe and unnecessary?

I either read or watched a show where someone from Porsche was asked if it was necessary. He said they really only have it there so the kids looking in the window can see how fast it goes

Not a problem IMO because ALL the instruments are there now for "sentimental" value.
Basically all that's really justified and needed on the dash behind the steering wheel now is little computer display like the PCM.
You know, stating the obvious here: remember when gauges were actually mechanically and individually connected to specialized sensors on the engine or tranny? That's why they were separate units. Now, that's ancient technology. cRaZy!

I've never once used it. I assume it is some sort of legal requirement that there be a traditional speedometer?

Unfortunately, when they crowded together the dashboard gauges they took what used to be about 270 degrees of real estate on a circular gauge to about 200 degrees on a partial gauge! And the space between the numbers used to be significant. Today's hash marks (tiny!) are 5 mph apart! Who can even RESOLVE that at speed??

The analog speedo is redundant. It's nice to have it there in case the digital display fails.

It is difficult to see the analog speedometer as Porsche has tried to sqeeze a lot af gauges into a small area. It do not like digital speedometers but see the neccessity with the 911. The commitment to the tach at the cent makes this a requirement unless they move the oil and coolant temp to the digital display with a rolling menu combined with warning lights. In any case, I have gotten used to the digital mph display.

I've thought way too much about this. My guess is that although the analog is relatively useless, Porschephiles would have screamed if they had eliminated the analog gauge -- it was left in for marketing purposes only. A vestige appendage.

There's a host of NHTSA rules requiring the analog gauge as part of the car's safety equipment, accuracy of the odometer, etc. If Porsche could do away with it, I'd be happy to see it go and be replaced with other measurements, but government regulations change much slower than technology or consumer taste evolves.
