this should be easy. if u want PDK, get the GTS. if u want manual, get the GT3. it's really that simple.

Where is the Turbo crowd chastising the OP about his intent to go back to NA RWD?

It sounds like the head says GTS, but the heart says GT3. Hope a date at the Porsche dealer will provide clarity.

But then again, you could always wait for the 991 - it'll be introduced in 2011 as a 2012 model. It's going to be larger, more powerful, and faster than the 997.

Spätzle? Did anyone mention Spätzle?

Is anyone here not sold on the 9A1?

FWIW, the score is GT3: 8 GTS: 7 991: 1

I am going to drive the GT3 and 997.2 S back to back today. I am bringing my turbo out as well. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.

I am. That's what makes the decision more difficult - a significant improvement over the M96/M97 engines, less mass than the GT3 engine, fewer parts, and not enough difference in HP or torque to matter for most people. They've been out long enough now and I have not heard of major issues (others may disagree).

On the 991 - I am sure it will be a great car, but I for one am not looking for something larger and more in the "grand touring" direction. I recognize Porsche may need to evolve in that direction to meet the larger market demand, but that is not where my interest is.

Sounds like a fun day no matter what you ultimately decide.

I'm probably too late to the party here but I'll put in my $.02 anyway. There are a lot of assumptions being made about the 991 (too big, too GT, etc) for a car that no one has even seen yet much less driven. The car will be out in probably 6-9 months. If it were me getting ready to spend $100K+ on a new 911 I'd at least wait and give it a look before I committed. It sounds like you're leaning toward the GT3 and if form follows the past, that model will still be around if you decide the 991 is not for you. And it's not like you're suffering with the Turbo in the meantime!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Agreed!

What is interesting is that if you search back around 2004 there are threads in the 996 forum that voice concerns about the 'upcoming 997' model which are VERY reminiscent of current threads that comment on the 991. History has a way of repeating itself.

The regular 911 is almost common enough that it won't get attention, but a giant carbon fiber wing?
Wrong - base GT3 has no rice quotient, it's the RS which has CF wing and stickers, etc. Base GT3 has a smaller, body-color wing.

GTS

Differences that the GT3 offers are only really worthwhile if you track it.

Absolutely. Imagine you're back in the day as a late 70's early '80's 911 enthusiast and someone is describing to you the dimensions and design of a 997.2. Heresy! Blasphemy! Porsche has sold out to the marketeers! Handling ruined! I'd never own one of those! Yet here we are with our latest generation Porsches lamenting coming changes that are much less than the ones between those early 911's and today.

I loved my 3.2 Carrera and I wish I still had it. But trade it for my 997.2 S? Well that decision is obvious since I spent big money on the latest car instead of a pristine old 911, but no way! Just a hunch, but in a few years the various fabulous iterations of the 991 will be out there and most of us will be looking back at how silly the concerns seem that we're having now.

Sometimes I fantasize about buying a GT3 and putting a normal 997 bumper and wing on it, and changing the suspension to something softer. It would be the super stealth ultimate street machine.

Buying a GT3 is like marrying a model. High maintenance, sometimes annoying, but how could you say no?

I don't agree with your statement that the "base GT3 has NO rice quotient." While it may have less rice quotient than a GT3RS, the GT3 wing does have a rice quotient, especially when compared to a 997 without an aerokit.
