OK , lets try this one...http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...pn=99610530305
Parts 36 and 38
Yesterday my 2005 C2 started to miss quite badly and I got a flashing check engine light. Limped a couple of miles home. I was thinking a bad coil so I removed them and once I got to the second bank on the drivers side I noticed that the electrical connector to part36 was broken. There was some corrosion along the fracture so I suspect it had been cracked for awhile and finally let go.
Two of the coils were cracked but I suspect my problem is with this actuator.
My question is , what does this actuator do?

I Google'd one of the part numbers and found this thread, where some guy explains the actuator/solenoid in the second post:
http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-boxst...-solenoid.html
Hope this helps!
EDIT: even though that forum says Cayman/Boxster, the part number looks the same, and the conversation they're having about the actuator should still apply to a 911.

Thks for that. Very informative. It never ceases to amaze me how complex these cars are.
I repaired the connector and am awaiting the arrival of sparkplugs and coils today. Hopefully all will be well once the work is done and if so I guess I'll never know if it was the coils or actuator causing the missfire.

I thought I would update my cars situation.
I replaced the spark plugs and coils (not fun) and repaired the cam actuator connector and then took the car for a drive. No misfires and smooth idle but the car was way down on acceleration and power. The check engine light came on (solid light , not flashing as before) so back home to the garage.
I removed the "repaired connector" and temporarily wired the cam actuator to the harness. Took it for a drive and "Lo and Behold" my 997 was back.
I tried to source a new connector from the local Porsche dealer but they are unavailable unless you want to buy the whole harness and remove the engine to install it.
Back to the garage with trusty dremel tool in hand , surgery was performed and connector internals were repaired.
It's amazing how much difference there is in power with the variocam system U/S.
The car is running like a champ now.
