Default New member with a 997 question

I'm a new member here at rennlist and I'm looking for a 997 to buy. I have what may turn out to be a silly question but this one puzzled me.

I was looking at an '06 C2s with ~32,000 miles on it. After sitting for a few days it smoked some blue smoke on start up. Salesman explained that "they all do that do to the oil set up on 997's".

Is this true? Admittedly I am a Porsche virgin, just now looking for my first one but that would ordinarily be warning sign with other cars I've bought. Is this a common occurrence? The car ran very well otherwise.

Thanks!

Bill

Very common.

It is simply oil that has drained down the cylinder walls from sitting and is immediately burned off when started.

It was actually a much more significant issue with the oil cooled engines years ago. To a lesser extent with the water boxers. It's just the nature of a boxer engine.

Normal, provided the smoking occurs only right at startup and is very brief. The engine should not exhibit any other signs of distress or untoward behavior.

When I was shopping a new Boxster it smoked upon startup. I drove the car and it ran just fine (and had only 26 miles on it and 16 or so the salesman and I put on the car during the test ride/drive).

But I was unable to make a deal for the car and left but went back later that same day and asked to see the car again and to have its engine started again. This time the engine did not smoke. After some morenegotiating I ended up buying the car. Nearly 245K miles later, the engine still once in a while smokes upon startup.

Normal.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I don't think I've ever seen that on my car(05C2S) It usually sits Mon-Frid, then I start it on the wknd. The car does not really burn any oil either though. Maybe if I let someone else start it and look from behind...

It is normal. However, if you want to eliminate it (or minimize it) do the following:

1 - Make sure that the last few miles before you park the car for the day are 'cool-down miles'.
2 - Let the engine idle for a minute or two when you last stop the car for the day.

Do not start the car cold and stop it immediately without going through a proper engine heat cycle. Say, if you start the car cold to move it a few feet and shut it off shortly, it will smoke the next day when you start it (dependent on atmospheric conditions, such as air moisture content).

Not to threadjack, but on a similar topic... if it's only out of one bank would that suggest scored cylinders?

Or, a bad air/oil separator.

Mine only smokes if it has been parked on an incline (downhill usually), but I do always cool down for the last 1/2 mile and let it idle a bit before shutting it down. 76k miles of experience there (nothing like Macster's run!).
