Dash-mount radar detector vs. bumer-installed detector?
#16
The radar antenna can not be installed behind any metal in the bumper. Behind plastic is ok. It can also he installed in the center "grill" area with a full view of the road.
The CI and the IX contain totally different radar antennas. It is the different antennas that make the CI, STiR+ and Redline more sensitive than the IX. The CI, STiR+ and Redline use Beltronic's M3 radar antenna, where the IX uses the Beltronics M4 radar antenna. The M4 antenna is also found in the 8500 series, and the Beltronics 65 series.
If you are new to radar detectors, I would purchase the IX, and learn how to use a radar detector. Then after you learn, then purchase an installed radar detector. If you want a lower price installed radar detector the Whistler 3600, is a good unit. It is not as good as the CI, or STiR, but is ok. Also Escort makes a 8500CI installed radar detector. It is based off of the M4 radar antenna. Not as good as the 9500CI, but a good detector at a lower price, it has performance like the 9500IX.

Thanks guys... could u guys with 9500Ci, post some pics as to the following:
- WHERE did you install the radar module (behind bumper?)
- Where did you install the Display?
- Where did you install the Controller?
- Where did you install the rest of electronics (bridge, GPS, Speaker)?

In the pics you can barely see the front sensors in the opeining below the fog light towards the center. The rear sensor is in the license plate area at the top & center. See pics for display & controller locations.

Dash mount radar in a late model Carrera looks like dog s**t! Put a V1 in your rearview and you will be golden!

So is nobody using a Valentine 1 anymore? I have a friend that swears by them. I haven't had a detector for several years, but have thought about picking up a newer model.

I have a V1 in my RS4. I was going to install one in the targa but the seller left the 9500ci in the car. I still love the simplicity of the V1, the bogey counter & the directional arrows. The 9500 is more complex to use but adds laser shifting & the GPS is nice since it will learn the location of speed signs and not beep when driving by. I like them both I guess. :shrug

Also, to add front laser shifting, can I install the REAR Laser shifter upfront in the middle on the lisence plate instead? Would that help?

I have a 9500ix + Escort ZR4 laser shifters in my 997 and an Escort 9500ix + Laser Interceptor in my M3. Both detectors are mounted high and to the right of the mirror - not ideal to press buttons on the detectors since they are on the top (unlike my previous V1 with all controls on the front) but these are mostly set it and forget it devices. I think the LI is the superior laser shifter based on reviews but both basically do the same thing. I also looked at a fully integrated 9500ci-type solution but I preferred the semi-permanent install route. Works well, a bit cheaper than a fully integrated solution and the radar is all but invisible to passers by and police who might look into your window. I have gotten a ticket recently from an air trooper that timed me between road markings and the ground trooper never noticed my radar detector when he gave me the ticket. Turns out he was a Porsche owner but still wrote me the ticket because according to him, the air trooper is the one who issues the citation and he was just acting as the agent of it.

If I was you I would but the STiR+ and the Laser Interceptor. It will cost less than the 9500CI, and offer you better protection. This past weekend I had the opportunity to shoot a LIDAR gun at a car with escort laser shifters. They didn't jam anything under 800 feet. The reason the STiR is better than the 9500CI is that it is more programable than the CI. Ka band radar contains many frequencies 33.4 to 36 Ghz. The frequencies used in speed enforcement center on 33.8, 34.7 and 33.5 Ghz. On the STiR you can program it just to focus on those frequencies, which will reduce the time it is scanning frequencies not used. This will give you greater performance. Coupled with the ability to turn RDR off (most radar detectors emit radio waves in the frequencies scanned by radar detectors, RDR evaluates the signal to determine if it is a true threat or emissions from another radar detector. This program uses a lot of CPU resources, and can result in a police radar signal being missed, because RDR is using the radar detectors resources evaluating another radar signal.). The 9500CI is not programable like the STiR for these features, although they are made of mostly the same major components.
No, you can't put the radar antenna behind your license plate, but it can be mounted flush to the license plate either below or to the side if it.

I am debating if I should get the Escort 9500ci system, which has detector installed behind bumper, plus Laset shifters outside.
Would that be better coverage? vs. dash-mount Radar with another later shifter combo?
The cost is pretty much the same, the only thing is that if I did the installed radar, it will pretty much be part of the car even if I sold it later...
Any experience with Escort 9500ci?
My other option is just Escort dash-mount 9500ix, hard wired, then maybe a laser shifter in the future.

perfect location and it gets radars signal in front and in rear perfectly fine.
i had escort in old bmw, V1 is way better model.

I have a rearview mirror unit in my C2S and a windshield mount that I use in all other cars. Best dam detectors I have ever owned, especailly helpful is the bogie count and location arrows!

this was custom made steering wheel and it broke apart in my hands about of 6 months ago. upper part of wheel completely broke off. so, no more custom steering wheels for me.
may be i will put in thick gt3 rs wheel one day, but not now.
