Default Car won't shift into 1st when rolling in traffic

I am two weeks into ownership of my 2008 CPO C$S with 12,000 miles on it. When the car is stationary I have no issue getting into any gear but I notice in traffic, with the revs low and rolling under 10 miles per hour (even 4 mph) I can get the car to go into 1st. When traffic stops, no issue. Is that normal?? Thanks for the insight.

when in neutral lift the clutch and "blip" the gas - then push in the clutch and try while the rpm's are still "up"

its a normal thing IMO

this will take some practice to get right, but gives you something to do while in traffic

it can be done as ivangene described, but otherwise totally normal. do a search on here and you'll see. PLENTY of threads on the subject. some even have occasional trouble getting into 1st after sitting at a light in neutral/clutch out. again, "normal".

Seriously check out this deal someone posted on rennlist when they were hunting for a non-widebody winter setup. they knew it was a sweet deal and posted it to the board. I just got the set and the rears are brand new and the fronts have 2 seasons left. the guy also threw in his like new weather tech winter floor mats! the rims look brand new!!! Thanks Rennlist!

really nice!!

I had dedicated wheels/tires for winter on the 996 - it was a great move, allowed quick swapping, great tires and no comprimises as the summer tires could then be the max performance I could afford...and the winter tires make these cars one of the best handling vehicles in the bad weather - excellent choice!!

I also find that a shift into second helps. But the guys above ate right. You just get used to it and role accordingly. I get lazy in traffic, give myself some room and try to coast in first at 5 mph. Basically I'm to lazy to shift up until I hit 20.

I believed it was normal too, since so many people reported it. Then a couple weeks ago the shift cable broke in mine and the dealer replaced it (thanks to the extended warranty some guys think is stupid a $500 job that only cost me $50). Since the new cable it snicks into 1st easy as pie all the time. Just saying....

Well then apparently my car is very abnormal. At speeds below 10mph it usually slides in readily, albeit with a bit of pressure. I definitely don't need to be at full stop or blip the throttle, etc. Anything above 10mph it won't go in at all, but that is typical for all manual transmissions.

You might try some added pressure. Nothing extreme, but a firm push may get it done. It does on my car.

That said, my notchy 2nd gear drives me a bit crazy, but everyone including two dealers have always told me that is normal.

I have come to acknowledge that these cars have finicky shifters and no two cars are exactly alike.

For 2nd gear smoothenss when the car is cold....... I have found that if I rev to 3,500 - 4,000 it shifts much smoother into 2nd gear.

Problems getting into 1st can sometimes be solved by 'clearing the gate'.

To do this, put the clutch in, shift into 3rd(don't let out the clutch), then into 1st and it should slide right in.

My 997 doesn't have much of a problem with this, but my E46 M3 did, and this worked perfectly.

I must have the same transmission as JW911. When warmed up, it will slide right into first while rolling to a stop with no issues. It hates second gear unless shifting north of 5k. 2 Factory reps said it's normal, and that the transmission just isn't spinning fast enough when short shifting (2 to 3k revs). Now I pop the shifter into neutral before hitting second, and all is well. Shift at 5 or 6k, and it'll slide into second nice and smoothly.
