How many flat tires have you had in the past three (3) years?

I'm close to purchasing my first Porsche (997.2) and the dealer is pushing a Road Hazard warranty that covers tires and wheels (3 yr / 12,000 mi) for ~$900. His comment "It's not if you get a flat but when" got me thinking. He explained how it can be very exspensive if you have to replace both tires due to tread wear of the other tire at the time of the flat, etc.

Also, has anyone purchased this type of tire and wheel warranty? What has been your experience? Thanks...

So, how many flats in the past three (3) years?

I paid $750 for mine Road Hazard when I purchased my car in 09. It can help defray the cost of tires but is not totally necessary. Also my policy covers the rim as well. If I get a flat in any vehicle I always drive it to a safe location if possible. I can get another rim but I cant get another me. So the policy would repair or replace my rim if needed.
Just my 2 cents!

I've actually had a fair few nails in the tires, and one actual flat, again caused by a nail. Nothing for a while, but I can confirm that my experience somewhat matches what your dealer is telling you.

My wife has a BMW w/ run flats and we paid $600 for wheel and tire protection.

So far 2 wheels, 2 tires.......free

Potholes kill runflats and rims

how much ~ $ is the car...and does this cover wheels...

if you are talking $80+k car, why ponder over $900!

IF!

it covers wheels too!
i assume 19" wheels and those are prone to breaking if you hit something - that would set you back a couple G right there...and I suspect sidewall damage is more prone than an actual flat tire so make sure that is covered

I dot want to answer the Q because it might JINX me - but a very very very long time w/o

I think it has a high deductible and a max payout of five k. Just read the fine print.

It does cover tires and wheels. I just didn't want to throw away $900+ dollars if it wasn't necessary. I wanted to hear real life experiences from people who may have had flats, cost of flats with and without this coverage. Since this will be my first Porsche (or any high $ sports car) I wasn't sure what to expect.

I've learned so much from this forum and want to continue making educated decisions.

Thanks to all of you for your continued input and help.

hope my words help you along the way...either way you choose

I never claim to make good choices but with a "collective agreement" rule out the obvious bad ones - best of luck, you are in for a life changing experience

Just paid $1,400 for my second 5 year tire/wheel insurance plan with In-Tire. No deductable. New plan covers curb rash too.

Paid $800 for the plan when I bought the car in 06. Had two rear flats at $600 each at the P-Car dealer so I came out ahead. (Dealer will only replace flat tires/never patch).

Already had a front flat under the new plan.

All you need a a couple of flats for the plan to make business sense. Add a busted/bent wheel and you come out way ahead.

You're only going to hear about the people who purchaced the insurance and "who got ahead."

The rest are not going to admit that it is dumb to insure yourself against a loss you can easily shoulder.

Unbelievable. I wish I had tire insurance. I've had so many nails and flats I've actually lost count. I live in a city with constant construction and at the time the 2010 Winter Olympics build it got worse. It was usually the right rear, that is closest to all the road garbage that gets spit over to the curb. Then when parking I'd pick it up (at least that is the theory). Many times I'd be able to plug them but if it was near the side wall I'd have to do a complete replace. This is where the expense of $800 a rear began tp bug the crap out of me.
We have large tires made out of softer rubber for excellent road handling. This is one of the negatives.
I'd go for the tire insurance. Maybe first price out the cost of replacing a rear first and then decide. But I am one that wish I had it.

I've had three punctures in my whole driving history, over 20 years.

When I bought my Porsche from a dealer they sold me wheel and tyre coverage. I think it was about $1200 for 5 years. After a couple of days I decided it was one of those things I'd rather not insure. I got my money back. No good feeling happy that you've done a good deal on the car only to hand over money for something that is unlikely to happen.

Six flats in less than three years on the 997 and 2 for my wife in less than two years on the Mini Cooper. I was able to plug all of mine (against all recommendations). Both Mini Cooper run flats had to be replaced. It didn't help that we had houses being built in the neighborhood.

Next new car I will buy the coverage if it includes wheel replacement for curb rash because I have some of that going on as well.
