Default 997.2 Carrera vs 997.2 Carrera S

I have just started looking at 997.2 cabs for this summer season. For those of you who have driven both, how noticable is the perfomance difference on the road in the real world?? There seems to be a 7-10k $$ price difference between the two. Also is there a difference in how the engine and exhaust note sounds between the cars. I am coming from having owned a 2005 Boxster S and 2006 Carrera S cab. Thanks for all your opinions.

The 3.8S has significantly higher low-end torque than the 3.6. The 3.8 is equally free-revving.

I find the 997.2 so fast that I can almost never use full power. Definitely drive both and see what YOU like. People have different driving styles and are in different environments/conditions.

I actually think .2 Carrera is pretty close to .2 Carrera S, while 997.1 S was definitely a step up over non-S (not just engine, it had much better brakes, while 997.2 Carrera brakes are better now). As others said, DRIVE BOTH, and decide if you want the extra HP... in most likelyhood you don't, and then just decide on options/color.

Sorry to bump this thread, but what did you end up buying? After going through the same process, I went for the Carrera S. The dealer had one of each left, and funny thing is my dad ended up buying the Carrera that I chose not to buy.

+1 for the drive BOTH advice.
When I was shopping for 997's I drove both Carrera and Carrera S, and liked the S a little better...then my wife drove the 4S and her mind was made up

I came from an '05 M3 to an '06 Carrera Cab, and quite honestly, a few HP never hurt but I am absolutely, perfectly satisfied with my 3.6 engine. Maybe if I was in my 30's or even 40's I might want more power, but frankly it is about the driving experience that makes this car fabulous, no matter which version you get. I really don't miss any extra HP.

BTW, I should have said that my C2 Cab is plenty fast and I am perfectly happy with the base engine. I am not some newbie, I have owned plenty of sports cars in my life and this is far and away the best. The only thing I question is why I waited so long.

Drive em and see what feels best to you, much like others have suggested. For me, I sometimes think about Turbo power as I took one out when I bought mine.

You can never be too rich , too thin or have too many hp. Now that I have driven the new 991S cab, I am futher confused what to buy. And the word is the new Box S is amazing! Decisions , decisions.

I had a 05 Carrera 3.6. I loved that car - I thought the 3.6 was more free revving than the 3.8 and sweeter at higher revs and also sounded better. I sold that car when I got the RS 4.0. I missed it a lot so I bought a 997.2 C2S. I like it a lot, especially with the sport exhaust. In stock form I still think the original 997.1 Carrera 3.6 sounded better and was a sweeter engine overall. You had to work the gears a little more but was more fun.

Depends what you want it for. I'm perfectly fine with a 997.2 C2, it is more than fast enough in the canyons and back roads that I drive as much as I can. i don't track the car. And I don't drag race. If you want crazy fast acceleration, get a turbo. If you are going to track, get the C2S for the (slightly on the 997.2) better brakes or PASM which is optional on the C2. I cared more about finding the right low-miles, color, lack of unnecessary options car than a C2 vs C2S because when I drove them both based on how I drive and how I will use the car, it just didn't make a difference (to ME). YMMV
