Default Are there differences between 991 PDK & 997.2 PDK?

The sales manager at my local dealer went on and on about how much better 991 PDK is than the outgoing 997.2 PDK. Funny, he didn't want to go into specifics. Does anyone know what, if anything, has changed with software or hardware in the 991 implementation? Did a quick search and didn't see anything on this particular topic - apologies if I missed something.

I don't know detailed specifics either, but I've read a number of reviews that have mentioned hardware and software upgrades that result in smoother shifts at part throttle, and quicker more responsive ones when desired. I thought I read somewhere that they have also shaved a few pounds from the new gearbox.

The program is different and there are a few modifications to the internals. The tech that does the work on my car informed me about this. He also said there is no way to switch to the new PDK. Not that I'd want to foot the bill on that change.

I cannot stress enough how much the change in the pdk is night and day. I have a 997.2S PDK and 991s PDK. The 997 pdk transmission and I don't want to upset anyone is made completely obsolete in comparison. It like the difference between a 360 ferrari and 458 if you have had the pleasure of driving those. The 991 pdk is revolutionary. Makes the 997pdk feel more then 1 generation apart. this is not a joke, im very serious. haters can say what they want. I have both and know the truth!!!

the 997s pdk sucks unless its at least in sport. But then its very jerky. the 991s shifts in regular mode faster then a 997s in sport plus! driving around in sport auto is smooth. Its awesome. Pair it up with the sport exhaust and sport design steering wheel and its fun factor is up there with exotics no BS.

I have driven both and I find no difference. There is perhaps a different engagement feel, which actually varies from car to car, and that engagement feel is a software decision of no consequence. I have driven both the 991S and the 997.2S PDK (both with full SC).

What makes a 'feel' difference is the auditory track of the Symposer - psychoacoustics, which conveys the intake modulation produced during a shift. That auditory stimulus is there in the cabin in the 991, whereas in a 997 it is outside the car.

Besides... PDK gearboxes are fully clutched gearboxes like manuals, therefore once engaged, they play no role in performance feelings - it's either engaged or disengaged.

You must recalibrate your PDK. No such thing in my car, at all.

Prior to taking mine in for some PDK issues, It would slip a little going in reverse and a little initially going from reverse to first and a few other problems. They had it for a week talking with the factory and since having it back for a couple of weeks I am still shocked as to the difference both in power and shifting speed. It is like a new trans! This time i thought I would leave it in auto so the trans could memorize my driving style and based on the update or whatever they did I now leave it in auto 90% of the time vs. what I was doing prior by shifting myself all of the time.

Adias I hope you are right and I will stop by Champion for them to check it out. Maybe it has to do with the 40,000 miles on my 09 C2S or countless launch controls. I will have it checked out this week and report back.

Very interesting stuff. It would be great if they can make mine better.

Ask your dealer to recalibrate your PDK. Make sure the tech has done it before, as it is an elaborate process.

I have a 2012 997 S Cab. Bought it in Nov 2011. I could tell no difference in the 991 PDK I drove and mine.

Funny how some people talk about the 997 PDK as something obsolete, This PDK Was the BEST AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ( at least in Europe) since 2009. How can Anyone say its obsolete next to the 2nd generation. I tried the 991, And for me it was the same as the PDK in the 997. Problably on a more intensive use I would see some improvements, but saying it turns the 1st generation obsolete...We are talking about the TRansmission that makes a stock 997s be faster than a 996 turbo, Thats something!

Some may have uncalibrated PDKs in their cars (easy to remedy) and when they drive a properly calibrated one they see the difference.

What I find interesting is that a lot of the people who would never touch a 997.2 PDK now fully embrace the 991 PDK. I think the reason for that is that PAG is not releasing manual 991s initially, and those who need to have the newest car have no choice, and naturally now they love PDK.

Quick Reply: Are there differences between 991 PDK & 997.2 PDK?
