Considering a 997...

I saw a nice 2006 cabriolet yesterday but don't have a very good fix on 997 prices. This was at a Porsche dealer, and the car would be certified and (presumably) accident-free.

Thoughts on a reasonable offer? I know it would be a little higher coming from a Porsche dealer and being certified.

They also have an almost identical cabriolet with 29k miles (minus navigation but plus Bose) that is just now getting a brand new engine installed into it. Not sure what that might or might not do to the value, but thoughts are welcomed.

If it is Porsche CPO'ed and the PPI is clean mid $40s would be a decent deal.

IMS grenaded the engine on the second car.

Yes, the certification adds 2 years and up to 100,000 miles on the car's warranty. Not sure of the in-service dates of these two cars, but I suspect they are nearly out of the original warranty if not already. I don't know what Porsche does with new engines.

Actually it adds 2 years + 50,000 miles to the original warranty (if still active). The original warranty is 50,000 miles so 50+50=100. However, an 06 is out of warranty by now so you will only get 2 years, 50,000 miles. Just FYI.

I'm also looking at an 06 cab. $50k is a good price from what I've gathered.

Correct ... actually, would be 2 years or 83,000 miles. But I won't be putting 50,000 miles on it, so it's 2 years for me.

Warranty coverage extends until the earlier of:

• 2 years from the date of used retail delivery OR
• 50,000 miles from the mileage at used retail delivery, but not to exceed a cumulative 100,000 total miles on the vehicle

Don't forget that CPO and accident free don't have any relation... From personnal experience.

Price should be around 45 to 50 max. If mileage would be around 10 to 15k miles, than 50 to 55k price range...

I'm not sure about accidents but I know that as long as no more than two body panels are painted it can be CPOed.

To be usefull you cant just say "loaded", look at the great deal I got.
For all we know you think loaded is power seats and bose. There are hundreds of options, you can spend far more on decoration options than you probably can on things like bose, nav or pse. I was looking at a c4S that had $20K worth of decoration options.

Will probably take a pass on this particular car, the service history is a bit checkered (Carfax has a lot of info from certain states). Two owners. Clutch replaced at 14k miles (really?), transmission pulled at 27k miles to replace driveshaft seal and front crankshaft oil seal (common?), whereupon it went to auction and wound up with the second owner who hasn't put much on it in two years.

I still have not purchased my P-car yet (S2000 has to sell first) but in my years of car ownership I have found that being the third owner of most fast cars is a sucker's bet.

The first owner pays for the depreciation, the second owner enjoys it and the third owner pays to fix it.

I find this to be especially true when the second owner only holds the car a short time or for very few miles. The explanation for that situation is always that they didn't have time to drive the car but in reality, I'd say that 90% of the time it's because the second owner realized early on that he'd bought a pig in a poke and is trying to pass it along.

I thoroughly reject this generalization. An intelligent buyer and a good PPI will prove out the condition of the car. Especially with the ability to look at over revs in various ranges and other diagnostic info from the computer I believe that the # of owners is not a real important factor. It is great to get a one owner car and be able to size them up, but it is often not possible. Another thing with sports cars, especially in certain very affluent markets, is that people often buy them as 3rd or 4th cars and seldom drive them. There are a lot of "I always thought I wanted a Porsche (or Ferrari, or Aston, or whatever) and now I can afford one" buyers who quickly tire of either the manual tranny or the ride or the low seating position and sell the car after a year and a couple of thousand miles once it is out of their system.
