Happy to Be Here...and Loving the 997/991 Discussion
I just want to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all the thoughtful posts regarding the 997s/991s and I finally joined so I could participate in the discussion.
As background, I recently traded in my 2008 C4S, 6 sp. manual, sport chrono after seeing and test driving a 991 S and, while I LOVED the performance, just didn't fall in love with the lines. I had a harder time seeing the classic 911 of my youth in the 991, so I impulse purchased a 2012 C 4GTS PDK to "lock in" what I consider to be an instant classic. (I also have a 2010 Cayenne GTS that I love, so it's safe to say I'm a Porsche fanatic). I will point out for 997.1 owners that the differences between the 997.1 and 997.2 are significant. The new one handles better, is obviously faster and the creature comforts are amazing...but at the same time, the 997.1 sounded better (the sport exhaust on that thing was amazing), it felt more raw and actually felt "lighter" than the 997.2 and I miss the old one as much as I love the new one. I felt like Steve McQueen in that thing. Damn, does Porsche know how to market! (Now, as a separate issue, I also miss the 6 speed manual of my C4S except in bad SoCal traffic...there's just no feeling like rowing a 911 even though I realize the PDK is technically superior.)
So....my view, for what it's worth, on the debate between the 997 and the 991 is that it's a great time and a great discussion but that there are simply no losers...whether you love a 991 or a 997 S or a turbo or GTS is entirely a matter of preference and we're all lucky to be part of the amazing legacy that comes with driving a 911. These cars are all wonderful machines--every one of them--and I hope everyone enjoys their experience!

Where are the pics man? I think the GTS is awesome, and a great choice. I love the 997.2, to the point I don't have the usual new car itch even with the 991 out. It would cost me $50k to upgrade a 16,000 miles 997.2S to a 991S. Not going to do it. I would almost consider paying $25k more for a GTS but even that doesn't make too much sense. So staying put for now and actually pretty happy. The GTS has a great **** though and with PSE standard, what's not to like!

The 991, which I have also driven, is another story entirely. It is without a doubt a brilliant automobile. But for me it has strayed a leap too far from the unique, iconic and perhaps mildly anachronistic sports-car character which distinguishes a 911 from other European high-priced high-performance cars, and I would not buy one. At least not at this point. In five years time when my 997.1 warranty runs out and I'm faced with the economic reality of choosing a replacement, and when I will also officially be a senior citizen, perhaps the 991 will be just the right choice for me: something that looks like a Porsche but drives like a Jag.
