Question $1300 for TMPS battery change????

Hi Guys,

Loooonnnngggg time, no speak, but I'm hoping my friends here can help me out.

My TPMS started to get flaky so I took my car in and was told that in addition to the kits that get changed out each time you change tires that there's a battery in each wheel for TPMS. The dealership is claiming that it's $1300 to replace all four batteries (less if I just wait until the next tire change, but still close to $1000).

This seems pretty outrageous since the cost of the TPMS option was under $800, so this smells fishy.

Has anyone had to go through this already on their car, and if so how much did you pay?

My 2006 997 has 31k miles and has been darn near maintenance free (just oil and tires til now - nothing else yet), so it feels a bit like the dealership trying to get something out of me finally.

Thanks,
Ron

No way....go to Discount Tire and get new ones installed for around $400-500. I think that's what they quoted me last time I had new tires. I understand that the battery should last 4-6 years.

Thanks - this is the kind of feedback I'm looking for from multiple people.

I used to use Discount Tire, but the goons there love to use the air gun which damages the rims.

I know what you're say'n. You need to tell the goons to wrap some tape on the socket so they don't cobble up your wheels or you'll cobble up their face. Talk to the manager and ask that he personally take care of your car and oversee the process. Also, they need to be careful with you center caps not to beat them off and break them. Remind them to take their time and they'll do a good job. Unlike many business' Discount Tire really puts customers first.

These TPMS units are constructed with a sealed lithium battery and should last for about 7 years. Therefore the battery cannot be changed. You would need new TPMS units and then they need to be reprogrammed. Maybe the TPMS option can be disabled via the durametric tool, not sure if this is possible.

Fortunately I do not have this option but I do check my tire pressures with a manual pressure gauge on a regular basis, I find this a lot more accurate.

If your car is still under CPO, get this done before it runs out. I had mine changed out yesterday and took the opportunity to have new wheels put on. All covered by my CPO which runs out in two months.

I note that your '06 car had TPMS listed as an option, like mine. From '07 TPMS was standard and mandated by the Feds. I have tried to get my dealer to deactivate the TPMS, it was not mandated in '06 anyway, but he keeps coming back and saying no way. TPMS is great when it works but I've three OEM sets of wheels, with TPMS, none are able to be read by the car - arrrggg! (dealer assures me I just need new TPMS sensors)

Discount would charge about $25 / wheel for mounting and balancing.

I have a 2006 with 33k and the system just started acting up on me last weekend..sort of.
Each corner had always read 3 psi low.
At the end of a 2 hour ride, away from home ,of course, it lights up and tells me that 2 wheels are 4 psi low..and need of air..NOW ! and two others are reading low.
The car sits for a day and when I restarted same problem.
Tires appear just as they should..and I realize I do not have a gauge with me.
I wind up at a station, with a seemingly working, but finally determined to be broken air pump, and it bleeds a good 4 more lbs out of each tire..now it reads FLAT 8 psi down
I wind up at another station, top off each one with their in line gauge as a barometer and off I go.
In the process of traveling another 2 miles, the system settles down, tells me two are high..I bleed them down to approximately where they should be and continue home.
Theres a bit of up and down dancing for a while, but I'm convinced no tire is losing air, and after a while the system settles down.
Long story short...I get home, adjust the pressures just a bit, and now each corner is reading dead on accurate.

I had one which read 4 psi low at start up and then would stabilize after 2 miles. P-dealer replaced it under warranty near the 4 yrs mark. I expect the other three will go soon... hopefully before the CPO runs out. Saw TPMS listed as an option on tirerack for $350. Not sure if this is a generatic or Porsche specific but you might want to check with them as well.

Geez....now you have me wondering if my Fidelity Platinum extended warranty will cover these tire sensors.

Time to read the policy.

Remember that the sensors are model specific. You cant buy generic. For example what works on a 2011 may not work on an 2009.
