Flywheel failure symptoms?
Anyone had their dual-mass flywheel go south, and if yes what were the symptoms?
I have an intermittent, brief drivetrain rattle that seems to occur between 2300 and 3200 rpm when accelerating lightly from low/no throttle, and I'm wondering if the polymer coupling between the flywheel masses is failing or failed.
Car is 2005 Carrera with about 50k on the odometer.
Thanks.

Had to have my flywheel and clutch replaced at 28K miles. Symptoms were a very stiff clutch pedal, and a fairly severve bucking that occurred on mild acceleration. This would go away if I accelerated more aggressively, and seemed to be better once the car was warm. Only happened occasionally, maybe one out four drives, when the car was cold.

Dave, I have experienced symptoms that sound similar to yours in my 06 C2S. A vibration / harshness under light throttle openings around 3,000rpm. I have been advised this is baffles in the muffler that have come loose. Apparently a not uncommon issue. It's being replaced now... fingers crossed.

if you got 50k you may want to replace clutch in some time, so, usually at that time flywheel gets replaced as well. it is not very cheap but not extremely expensive neither. at same time replace AOS, replace RMS, check outside condition or replace IMS bearing if you can extract it out and car will be fine for 50k more miles after that. it is worth spending $5k-$6k on this work to make sure it does not blow up.
if you track it - you can install gtgears tbd or quaife into your gearbox as well, it makes a lot of difference and cheaper than a full LSD.
