Your engine number can be found by getting down on the left side of the car and looking across toward the engine just aft of the rear suspension pieces--anti-roll bar). It's on the case next to the flat bottom plate which contains the hole through which you drain your oil. Mine, for example,. was a Checkpoint 8 car on 28 May 2006. And yes, Authenticity Certificates are infamously wrong when it comes to content and the most notable area of inaccuracy is the engine code. (I had to have them correct my A/C three times to finally get it right).

You guys made me go out and check my engine number. I have #379 that came off the production line in 2004. Car was delivered to the dealer on September 2004 and is a Launch Edition 997.1 C2S. The engine number starts with M97. I don't know what IMS bearing is in the car, nor do I care. I have a greater chance of dying while falling down than have something go wrong with the IMS. Insurance is big business. And Vegas wasn't built on winners.

I'm officially confused, so the m96 definitely have the old design bearing where as the m97 doesn't in 2005??? Can someone clarify, I think there is still a lot of confusion on this subject.

I was told the bearing change came midway to late in the build run for the 2005 base c2. The m96 vs. m97 issue I have no clue about. I wish a seasoned mechanic or someone very familiar with the subject would clear it up once and for all. I'm sick of being unsure of the facts. All I can tell you is my dealer mechanic told me my car, a base non s carrera (late build) had the upgraded 06' bearing and I trust him.

I found this post over on 6speedonline. Skip down to post #8.

If someone can post up an example of an M96 engine on a 2005+ Carrera S or 4S, I'd love to see it. Similarly, I'd love to see an M97 engine on a non-S car.

Seriously? This is like discussed in 1,000 threads! Come on buddy.

I'd ask LN Engineering to be sure, you most likely got the old IMS (it was upgraded at some point in 2005) which is actually good because you can upgrade it.

based on your engine number you have the larger IMS bearing.

For all, on my above post I have included the correlation between Engine numbers and IMS bearings.

Hard to believe there is so much confusion about such an important topic with a potentially catastrophic problem.

With all due respect to LN Engineering (I do have their billet filter adapter and magnetic drain plug) they are in business to sell product so I suspect they'll fuel the IMS failure hype to their advantage.

Greg
For the 2009 MY Porsche eliminated the IMS as there were newer, stronger chain designs that allowed them to use a longer chain to drive both sets of camshafts from the driveshaft directly.
