Here in California, many citations are handed not via radar or Lidar(laser) but by CHP estimating your speed using his own speedometer, which makes the detector completely useless.
I average one speeding ticket every 2 to 2.5 years (thanks to traffic school, none go on my record) all on highways with this method. Challenging it is useless since the judge has heard it all and dismisses you in 5 seconds.

You must reside in a hanging judge's jurisdiction.

Installed the 9500ix, no trim removal, easy job, and everything but the unit is invisible. Attach the unit with the suction cups above the mirror, then tuck the flat cord in the channel that runs where the trim meets the windshield. Down the A pilllar and around the base (tucks in with a small push from any soft tip instrument) then down under and under the carpet to the fuse box. Then hook up to a switched fuse, and you'e done. No dangling wires, unit can barely be seen from the outside , and is very easy to take out when parking in an unprotected place. There is a post on rennlist with pictures that i used as a guide, under an hour and no mess. And yes, the gps is great in the city, and the traffic cam database has saved me twice while travelling in new cities. I can not even guess at the number of tickets it has saved me, when it says 'KA band' in North Carolina it is time to hit the brakes.

Bought a 9500ix last year. I can't say it has saved me a ticket yet. I've gotten more false alarms than true alarms. Half the time it's gone off correctly, I spotted the LE first! I tried out Escort Live....completely useless. I guess there are not enough Live users to update the system.

My concern is how low the K40 needs to be mounted on a 997. What has your experience been? Are you happy with accuracy / range?

Back on topic. I've got the 9500ix in the 997 and the beltronics 995 in the xdrive35i. After a week of city driving, the 9500ix locks out all the falses and is quiet as a mouse unless it's actually police radar. My wife drives the 997 the most actually and she can't stand all the falses so she gets the ix.
The Bel 995 is the exact same as the Escort X50 (but much cheaper). It doesn't have auto-lock out, but the falses don't bother me. You can manually lock out X band with the Bel and since the local PD doesn't use X band it pretty much stops the falses when it's off. Surprisingly a lot of automatic doors do work on K band though.
Now that the back story is done... Where I live there is no Lidar (laser) and no POP. The local PD use KA band in the cars and K band on the motorcycles. I would say 95% of the local PD have radar and they leave it on at all times. This I know as both the ix and 995 will tell you what radar band you're being hit with.
The ix and the 995 alert to K and KA band at such a distance that I can drive with impunity around town. I drive at whatever speed I feel safe and the conditions allow without any worry about what the "speed limit" may be.
We do take trips quite frequently. We're going to Disneyworld Saturday then up to PA next month. I always take the ix out of the 997 and put it in the SUV for road trips. The red light camera database with the ix comes in handy when out of town.
I don't drive terribly fast on the highway when we go on trips. 10 to 15 mph over the stated limit is where I'm at. Situational awareness has always been the savior for me on the highway. Around my local town though I completely trust my radar detectors.

Lucky you. Your local LEOs must have a very limited budget for both equipment and training. Where I live, they use laser quite a bit but even the radar guys use instant-on so a detector would only be of use if they targeted another car before you and you picked up the signal from that before they got to you.
For that reason, I've put off buying another radar detector (that, and the fact that I have a cabrio so I know that one day I'll leave it in the car and come back to find my top cut).

With the plethora of Driver Assist features in cars nowadays, manufacturers should incorporate such a warning device but to keep lawsuits at bay call it "law enforcement proximity assist" or something.
