Default Radar Detector

Friends, a quick search and all kind of "STUFF" came out about the topic of radar detectors. I need to purchase a radar detector, what would you suggest? I had a Beltronics installed in my old 996 and it was a bad idea... I had it professionally installed and end up with loose pieces of trim...and speeding tickets. Long story short, I need one for the 997 that I can move between cars, any suggestions?

Thanks for your advice.

V1. I am not in favor of custom installs either. Radar detectors should be removed when the car is parked in public lots.

Default RADAR UNITS

I have been very happy with a unit from Valentine One -- used from Amazon.

Escort Redline(superb on hwy) or Escort 9500ix for mostly city driving... there are a few hardwire DIY's on the 997 DIY sticky which do not require removal of any trim pieces.

V1.

Another factor: Two times it has acted up (alarming on laser when none around) and alarming on a radar band (I forget which one) continuously.

Both times I contacted Valentine Research was told (how) to send it in and include a $45 check and both times the V1 came back fixed and the check uncashed. Both times I contacted the company and was told the repairs were no charge. The unit is now about 12 years old this last repair taking place just a few months ago.

Oh, I have the V1 suction cup bracket mounted to the windshield of the one car but do not bother to move it to the other car unless I'm taking the other car on an extended trip. Then I move it along with the similarly mounted GPS/NAV unit.

In both cars I also rely upon how the V1 has made me more situation aware and thus better in paying attention to not only my driving, but that of other drivers, to the cars/vehicles around me, and of, well, just the ever changing situation that driving is all about, and thus spotting speed traps and even more dangerous situations in enough time to avoid anything bad.

A radar detector doesn't make the car invisible to radar. But if used properly it can make the driver of the car a better driver. And that pays off all the time just not when there's a bear up ahead.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Having used detectors for many many years (strictly for situation awareness, mind you!) I started with one of those large bulky Escorts, went to their Passport, and then chose the Valentine 1 for the 997. I have been extremely happy with it. With radar it is extremely important to mount the antenna as high as you can--it's all about line of sight. (Radar was my occupational specialty). Built-ins defeat much of the early warning because they are mounted in as inconspicuous a place as a 997 will allow--the grill, which is much too low. This translates to a loss of early warning. And it is all about the earliest warning that you can get.

I'm sure that everyone has their own favorite for different reasons, but for me... my Beltronics has moved with me through three previous cars, and now resides in my '07 C2. It is window mounted, and hard-wired, and it has paid for itself NUMEROUS times. Luckily, detectors are legal in California, but jammers are highly illegal, I believe in every state. Oh, and just a side note... the detector was giving me a few problems about two years ago, and for around $60, I sent it to Beltronics, where they refreshed the unit, reprogrammed it, and gave it a new case.

My Beltronics detects laser. It saved me once when driving down Pacific Coast Hwy in Huntington Beach. The city cops there use laser.
