iPad mini on the 997
the iPad will be mounted permanently with the option of removing it really easily. music is tru iTunes with all my library plus pandora. also fm radio thru I heart radio app. wifi is always supplied by clear and it's portable hotspot. movies, videos, YouTube, apps, obd2 connection thru Bluetooth adapter plug for engine management apps, gopro remote app for my go pro hero 2, plus **** in the car! lol! the iPad charges thru the car and stop charging while the key s removed. since the iPad is recessed 1/4" the bezel will make it look like it came with the car... I will paint the AC and PSM switch panel in black to match everything...
The iPad mini will connect and charge thru the original PCM wire loom. music will play thru the car's stereo. I didn't have navigation on my PCM so this upgrades worth something to me. with the use of a wireless obd2 compatible plug and will transfer a lot of info to the "torque" app. I can set wireless cameras that connect to the iPad either via Bluetooth or wifi and use them as backup cameras and upfront too... all iPad functions remain.
in regards of the PCM functionality, my car for some reason didn't have any enabled. no chrono control and not any user programmable settings. like I said, I used the PCM for music only and to see a full color screen render black, orange and white!
I finally got to work on the bezel last night. pretty tight! I like it so far....
harness from euromotorsports
GT2RS radio elimination shelf custom fabricated to a bezel:
This is where I'm right now.
Sounds plays thru the car. Waiting for the iStream and the belking bluetooth. Hooked up with a guy to make ma a custom 90 degree lightning cable...
finished up the bezel and fits like a glove. Love the way the iPad is recessed into the bezel. totally factory looking.
Still to do:
finalizing the cabling, adding everything else and paint the center panels black and the anti glare screen protection in matte finish.
This thing rocks!

Very impressive! You're onto something here! Maybe you can make a build list of components and prices for us non-techies? I'm going to take some measures to see if it makes sense for a 996...

Looks sharp. I wonder whether any auto manufacturers would ever consider creating an option for an iPad dock instead of a factory head-unit. Would be a nice option today - and certainly would be valuable as these cars age to somewhat future proof the technology. Because PCM 3.0 is going to be pretty dated for the guy who owns a used 997.2 in 2020.
Have you considered an anti-glare film coating? Powersupport makes very good ones and they do improve legibility in bright sunlight quite a bit. Lots of pilots who use iPads in the cockpit use them.

The home button will be functional thru the bezel (an extra home button will be placed there that connects to the iPad's home button, (remember you can use hand gestures, 4 or 5 fingers, to navigate thru apps without having to use the home button and you can use the 5 finger pinch to go back to the home screen) all the center dash will be painted to match...
