I changed the serpentine belt in my 997.2 (2009 C2 Cab) today and there is enough of a difference between the instructions for a 996 and a 997-1 that I wanted to add some info for the 997-2.

Highlevel Changes

• You'll need a 30 mm wrench to move the tensioner bolt (clockwise to release tension)
• You'll need a 16 mm wrench\socket to remove an engine spacer bolt
• You'll need to remove the engine spacer to slip the belt over the crankshaft pulley
• You'll need to remove the rear bumper cover to access the engine spacer bolt. (I was able to remove the bolt without removing the cover as I have thin hands and thin fingers, but it was difficult.

It took me two hours to change the belt. It had 61,000 miles on it and overall it was in good shape accept for the hole!

You can remove the license plate and access the spacer bolt through an access hole.

Thats exactly right. One thing irealized with the 997.2, the engineers created a great engine. I think it will go down as one of the more reliable engine designs. To top it off the engineers made sure that maintenace would be easy! Look at that filter look at that belt replacement procedure.,they place a hole in the bumper! Great just a great design.

I replaced my belt with this info. Thanks for the post.

I had a concern though. When I turned the tensioner, it stayed and did not rotate back. I had to rotate it back to tighten the belt.

Is the nut in the middle of the tensioner supposed to be loosened and then tightened to keep the tensioner in place? It looks like it might be a small round Torx nut in the middle of the 30mm main fitting. I tried putting a #50 Torz in there but it barely went in to the hole.

Is the tensioner spring loaded, is it held in place with a nut, or something else. I have seen pictures of a hydraulic cylinder with the tensioner part but I don't see any hydraulic cylinder on my car. Could be one behind the pulleys but hard to see.

Another question. I see in the first pictures that the pulley to the right of the tensioner has a small chip. My pulley also has a small chip. Should we be concerned with this? It appears to be a plastic pulley?!?!

What is that pulley driving? Power steering?

He does loosen the bolt on the tensioner so that the tensioner can move freely. You must tighten it afterward. This is not mentioned in any of the Renntech articles. Perhaps Loren can chime in.

You dont need to disassemble the Air cleaner box only if you plan on replacing the air filters at the same time. You can just unplug the MAS airflow sensor and the change over valve, and lift the air box out to access the area for the serpentine removal.

Hopefully I can report back on loosening the tensioner bolt, as I plan on replacing my serpentine belt shortly.

You don't need to. It's not in the service manual. And I did not do it when I changed my belt.
