Default 07-08 IMS fail - any documentation?

Ok so I read every single entry in the IMSsticky and I still didn't see any failures in 07-08. Does anyone have any firsthand or secondhand info on an IMS failure in these years? Anyone that had a friend who had a failure, etc. etc. ?

The sticky is very helpful for getting a general idea of how common it is but not as helpful for determining what years have failures. the summary was that most were 05's and a couple were 06.

Sorry for bringing up the hot button issue again but thought people might benefit from the info....especially people deciding between a .1 and a .2

Yes, my car, but previous owner. I bought it from the dealer when they put in new engine. PO traded it in on a new one. 2008 C2S.

Do you know how it failed? IMS? Cylinder scoring? Rod bolt?

Keep in mind that some people just assume it's an IMS failure. The only way to know for sure would be an engine tear down which cost money to do.

My local indy shops have yet to see a failure on any of the larger bearing cars. The thought doesn't even cross my mind anymore honestly.

Car had 59k miles. Customer reported increased engine noise. Partial tear down revealed a likely IMS/RMS issue although I dont believe a complete tear down was completed, I can go check the service notes I got with the car tonight and I will post them up word for word. Dealer reccomended complete new engine and the PO walked at that point.

I've read 1-2 (definitely low number) of 06-08 ims failures on this forum. Super rare tho

Porsche says less than 1%. Your chances of dying in a car accident are 1 in 60 or 1.66 % . If you want to worry about something I'd worry about the later statistic as engine failure caused by IMS failure in the cars you listed is only half as probable.

what are the odds of dying BECAUSE of IMS failure? 0.0016%?

I believe Phil Raby (former Total 911 editor ) stated in a recent article, that the IMS issues represents about 10 percent of the 997s(05 -08). That does seem high though. He also went on to say ,it seemed to affect the "garage queens" the most.

I'm not sure what is accurate or not, I just thought I might throw that out there.

Well, in fairness to rounding 0.0017%

I do suspect though that if Porsche has said only 1% of cars that number may be massaged. I wouldn't doubt they statistically eliminated any cars that where about to fail or where not 100% conclusive. The 10% mentioned in the thread also seems way too high. I'd guess it's somewhere between those two numbers.

The Eisen IMS Class Action Lawsuit reported an 8% failure rate for the small single row bearing used between 2000 and 2005.

This may be right but whatever the %age it is most heavily weighted towards the early 05's. To not acknowledge this is a bit self serving if you sell after market parts.

Were the failures covered under warranty if the vehicle was still within the warranty period?
