Default Whoa....Spyder wheels are how much??

I came across this the other day, and it's for the 918, and whoa, seriously?! And yes, I've read that the Veyron's Michelins and wheels are supposedly north of $100K to replace.

I've also heard there is a mandatory replacement period for wheels/tires. I can't remember what it was but it was ridiculously short. Especially once you engaged ludicrous mode.

So $60k is 6% of a $1m car, and 6% of $120k is $7.2k... Roughly the same proportion for a 911s set of wheels and tires through the factory. Maybe that's how they developed this insane pricing.

I never thought I'd say that CCWs or Fikses or even Dymags were cheap ...

Are you trying to tell me that the guy buying a 918 cares about the price of the rims and tires he wants?

But I'm cheap.

I'll take a stab at this; anyone feel free to correct me.

There are numerous alloys of magnesium, all with slightly different properties; all are light, and have a good strength to weight ratio but they suffer from poor ductility. This would be deformation under tensile force (think of it as the opposite of deformation under compressive force). Suggested rim replacement then is possibly a function of tensile forces somehow deforming and/or weakening the magnesium alloy at a molecular level.

Gosh, I guess I won't be getting a winter set of rims if I pick up a 918!
