Why did YOU choose a 997 over a Boxster/Cayman?

Always wanted a 911, its an iconic car. The Boxster/cayman started out as kind of a budget porsche. They have evolved in size, price and power since then, and the GT4 is an incredible car. But some reason those old Boxsters I see from the late 90s with stock chrome wheels and hard top added, just leave a bad taste in my mouth. Obviously things have changed since then, but even an ugly 911 (996) isn't nearly that bad. I kind of have this suspicion that Porsche knows that the Cayman was getting dangerously close to the 911 market (S, R, GT4) and that is why all the 2017+ have gone to a 4 cylinder vs the 6 for the 911. The lines need more separation, and it was probably a smart move.

For me a Porsche only means a 911 and always will. I am not that particular about the power. Most 911's have ample power for me, They also say the cayman/boxster is a better balanced / handling car than a 911. Again I am not that bothered. If I owned a cayman or boxster all I would be thinking about all the time is pity I don't have a 911.

I bought my 2009 911 (997.2) when the value of it became an irrelevant percentage of my net worth. That took me a while. I could afford a boxer or a Cayman when I was too stupid to own Porsche. Getting the 911 when the price meant nothing to me was a goal met. QED

I am one of those that sees only one shape when I think Porsche. The iconic, enduring silhouette of my 911. I have owned many sports cars, motorcycles and SUV’s but nothing has ever raised the hairs on the back of my neck and put that silly, childish grin on my face like my beautiful, wide bottomed, german maiden. It is quite simply the best thrill ride you will ever get on. With maybe one exception
While other Porsche siblings may deliver on some aspects of this wonderful model’s capabilities only the 911, with her fabulously refined engine placed behind the rear axle, can accelerate and brake like no other automobile. With lightly used 997’s in the low 40’s now, why would you consider another model? It’s frankly the best bang for your buck by far.
All you need to do is get in and hold on.

Like many, I was in similar shoes except I was looking for newer 981S or a 997.2, which were similarly priced. I loved the Cayman, but I just couldn't get over the "not a 911" factor. I always wanted a 911 - I too had a "turbo" poster on my wall as a kid - and I think I would have regretted getting a Cayman every time I saw a 911, new or old. In addition, as sweet as the 981 looks, the 911 design is timeless. I ended up in a super low mileage 997.2, and I can't be happier. If you will eventually own a 911, I don't think Cayman/Boxster is a bad start, for they are great cars and just as fun.

Actually, it was never a choice. Never, ever, ever, ever considered it an option. And then when I drove a new Boxster loaner from the dealer, I hated it. Drive both, if you still have to ask, you don't want a 911.

I always wanted a 911, and so didn't consider others. The back seats are very useful - we have a C2S cab, and are able to carry 2 sets of golf clubs in the back whilst having enough luggage space for a week of vacation.
Also, our dog loves to sit on the transmission hump.

Here is some perspective. A 911 is just wrong. Who puts an engine behind the rear axle? Why? What would be the purpose? It's been wrong since it was introduced in the 60's. Its STILL wrong today. Porsche is stubborn and has basically been changed very little in all these years.
Drive one on the track, and your answer is found! 911 all the way! Is the cayman good? Yep! Is it great? Probably. Is it a 911? No way.
