My adventure this weekend for a 997 Targa
Greetings to the nice Porsche folks here.
I’m new to this forum and a rookie for Porsche, but always liked what I saw from what Porsche offered.
So, one day I suddenly realised the used 997’s price falls into my budget. And its the best generation with classic looking and faithfal to its tradition.
I’m driving the Passat R36 now so I assume I’d like the PDK, and the practical glass roof really gets me, so I’m hunting a 997.2 Targa 4S.
Here is the first one that popped up, from like 2500km away.
Distance is not a problem, booked my flight and hotel. Made an appointment with the dealer, who claims the car to be in perfect condition, only the front bumper got a paint job, which sounds totally acceptable.
So I came to the dealer and went straight for the car, the general look is good, but
when I go to the details, things got ugly
These are the frame of the glass roof, nasty fix job, not sure why the roof frame needs fixing, I check the top, no sign of the car has been belly-up.
other 2 issues are navigation not available and the beam adjustment fail, which I did not take pics.
So we drove the car to their workshop to check the base, the engine seems to be in good condition, the mpg really surprises me for an AWD car at 3.8 liters.
Well, when we got to the workshop, I really feel sorry for this baby, not a carefuly driver, plus a terrible fix. I had to walk away though I really like it from the first look.
At first look it appears to be a oil leak
So far its still acceptable. But as you can see, the base had an accident
, the exhaust was out of shape, which leads me to further checking.
Still, I can replace the whole oil pan even with this $hit.
Finally, this, is what makes me walk away from it, broken heartedly.
This aluminum frame clearly received a heavy blow and cracked.
Its been 2 days and part of me still felt I should take her home and give her a fair treatment, but I don’t think I can undo the bad fix to the roof frame, plus I have no wish to give a penny to this dishonest dealer.
So I turned my attention to another one, which only makes me hesitate for its color, what do you think guys?
It has sport exhaust, Nappa interior, Bose, It’s about 7K dollars higher than the miserable yellow baby.I have spoken with the dealer and booked my trip again.
Wish me luck and I will keep telling you what’s going on, if this is not boring you already.
Thanks for looking guys.

Targa 4S' are not too common. I think you are wise passing on the first one. Second one looks like it has more options as well. From what I can see it has vented seats which the first didn't have. Full leather is nice and I think I spy sport exhaust behind the shifter. Seems like good options.
Color is a personal thing. Good luck!

Run away from the yellow one. Post the VIN so none of us buys it. With that visible cracked frame rail who know what else is lurking you can't see. The JB weld of the oil pan is sketchy too. As Bones would say, She's dead Jim.

The Nordic is a better color than yellow! I'm not sure how well that terracotta interior goes with the Nordic though. Gotta see it in person maybe to judge.
Man, that yellow car was worked. Hopefully it wasnt for sale from a porsche dealer.

Nordic Gold is the way to go. Sucks about that Yellow Targa but it's pretty rough, better to pass on it.
That's one great color though, that Nordic Gold.

Is the interior terracotta or Natural Brown? Hard to tell in that light. Either way, I like it.
