I was the high bidder on a 4.0 about 10 days ago on Bring a Trailer. I live in Phoenix and the car was in Las Vegas. I made a post on Bring a Trailer that I was going to fly up and drive it home (I really would have). It is a 1500 mile copy. The auction didn't meet the reserve and the owner of the car didn't even contact me to try to make a deal. Sad to see these cars not get driven. I'll keep running up the miles on my 3.8 for now I guess.

I am shocked they didn't even try to contact you. I'd think with the way markets and liquidity are at the end of this past week that your high bid should have been enough. Sigh...

I predict “reserve not met”. I don’t think this is the environment for someone to move a delivery mile 4.0 for top dollar. I could be wrong?

I agree. The ones selling as of late have sold in the $350-400k range. My bid on the low mile one on Bring a Trailer would have cost me $410k. It was the highest bid and there was quite a few guys bidding on it. But bids died at 400k. That's what they are worth today.

^^^imo, the 997-4.0 will have another run again one day, but for now, in addition to a lethargic car market, Porsche created a lot of alternatives to the 997rs platform over the last decade: manual, N/A screaming GT engine. The 4.0 is significant for a LOT of reasons beyond the manual, screaming N/A engine formula but the entire 997gt platform got about as frothy as a “modern classic” can. The 4.0 will always be the king of this genre/era; I think it just needs some time to transfer from modern to actual classic. It’s still one of the most special cars I’ve ever driven, regardless of the LE plaque. I’m sure this example will stay in a long-term collection and be one of the best examples of one of the most collectible 911’s money can buy down the line.

I agree what a shame. I just cracked 31k on my 3.8 and couldn’t be more happier in doing so. What happens to the car after I’m done is irrelevant

Bloody *******, not driving it. They must have no petrol in their veins to be able to resist. It makes others worry about driving theirs because an artificial value differential is created. As well as being wasted, the car's probably deteriorating. I got mine with 6,000km in 2016 and it hadn't been driven in the year before. The front axle lift started playing up and got worse, refusing to go down. The diagnostic process went on for 6 weeks because of parts shortages at the factory and having to wait for warranty approval before trying each new part. Finally the pump was replaced, probably because the seals had dried out from lack of use.

$621k for something you'll only drive if you're prepared to lose the $200k premium!
