991.2 3 manual is one of best CARS I've ever owned. My biggest complaint is the amount of driver feel/feedback prophylactic overall (including the rest of the 991 gt lineup).

they are great cars, but 997 are great TOYS.

I often skip meals b/c I am too busy doing other thing.
I NEVER skip desserts. NOTHING is more important in a meal than dessert.

Glad to see I'm not the only one piling on the miles in the last month. reclaims is right, this thing just gets better and better. Its like eating Japanese Wagyu every night and not caring. I keep driving it and the 3.8 RS sits at home. Why should a car this good just sit in a static collection? It's criminal if you ask me.

997 is good toy
914/6 is sitting mid air in the zen garden, I have only had such experience when I spoke with Dalai Lama or when I drove CGT. it is that good.

I'll add my 2 cents as regards the 997 3.8/4.0 RS differences.
I'm fortunate enough to have driven both back-to-back many times in an attempt to grasp the differences.
Everything that's been said about the suspension in the 4.0 holds true. In addition, there's the growl and torque that's present in the 4.0 motor - you can really sense and feel the motorsports heritage - it's throaty and angry when it comes on cam.
Yes, it's a slightly more special car, but all told, the price difference doesn't reflect in the driving difference.
Personally, I've found that I enjoy driving the 3.8 a little more than the 4.0, but that may be because I'm a little too conscious of the value of the 4.0 and thus perhaps drive the 3.8 harder. Either way, there's a delicacy to the 3.8; it has all the power one needs; all the balance and finesse one needs; all the grip one needs. It's a very real and visceral driving experience, and the steering is perhaps a tad more lively in your hands than the 4.0, IMO.
I'm very fortunate to own many P cars, from the 1950s all the way through the latest water-pumper GT cars. Truth be told, if I could own just one modern Porsche, it would be a 3.8 GT3 RS. As wonderful as the 4.0 is, the 3.8 seems just right to me. It's the Goldilocks of GT cars.

Vivian makes some great points here. The differences between these cars is a hard question to answer. I also drive both of them regularly, back to back and they both amaze me. The obvious metric the 4.0 shines in is the torque and power, and the sound it makes, the growl.. The 3.8 is a close second in the sound department however. Throttle response in the 4.0 is superior which should come as no surprise. The power comes on so fast it's as if the car anticipates what the driver will do before he does it. The steering is slightly lighter and the suspension feels more compliant, a little more forgiving in the 4.0 vs the 3.8. The steering on both of these cars is just phenomenal. You feel like you're right over the front axle and you just feel the front end 'dig in' on turn in. It's out of this world and gives so much confidence. Coming out of turns I would say the back end of the 4.0 is a little more planted, probably something to do with the rose joint suspension. But the point I'm trying to make is both the 3.8 and the 4.0 are truly special cars. There is something about the 3.8 that makes me very hesitant to let it go. There are subtle differences I still notice to this day. I will be driving the 3.8 on a back road and think 'Wow this is so good'...and that's after driving the 4.0. So it isn't as though one is so much better than the other that it makes sense to only have the 'better' one. Money aside, I love both of them almost equally, and that says a whole lot about the 3.8 I think.

I had 6 3.8 and 1 4.0 (and for 3 years I had 1 38 with my 40)
I kept 4.0
all 7 cars were bought at or below msrp
at msrp, you have to be a moron to buy 3.8 order 4.0 (my sticker was 19x)
at today's price, you may need to see a shrink to buy 4.0 over 3.8
40 is the better car, don't lie to yourselves.

If you ever sell it again I am in! I would love the 4.0 in black. Not many out there. You can't spend the money when you die. Enjoy what you want to enjoy.
