Hello! This is my first post here, I’m looking for some help and guidance from experienced members. I have located a special 997 GT3 RS 4.0 in Europe that I would like to bring to the United States. Luckily It’s a left hand drive car, and since it’s a relatively rare car, I think it would be possible to put up a non-conforming petition to import it. Outside of the side markers, and tachometer reading km/h, I wasn’t sure if there were any other differences between US and non-US spec cars. Has anyone brought in a car from Europe to the US? Will resell value be impacted? Any recommendations on anyone who could help me do this or where I should be looking to get it done?

I think that you will find, its not that easy / straightforward as the car is not 25 years old, and is not originally from the US (exported and coming back). The car needs to be "federalized" to dive on our streets. There is a "show and display" exemption from NHTSA but it is a limited list, and there are a lot of rules that include a 2500 miles a year limit. The federalization process details cover many things like side markers, glass, emissions, crash testing etc. There are lots of examples of cars that were simply tossed into a container, and "smuggled in" (or come via Canada which has different import laws), but I read recently an article where states are going after these vehicles (mostly JDM). One of the penalties is the VIN being black listed at the federal level, making it impossible to be legal again in the US.

There are a lot of companies / brokers that specialize in this process, you might want to talk about this with one of them (the poster above might be one).

I think age of the car supersedes any secondary NHTSA requirements. Here is Canada (Ontario specific) we have to wait until the imported car is 15 years old...

TX no prob CA you are fkd. you can title in CA but not register unless CARB'd, then the car is useless.
