MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport - The Essence of High Performance

11/22/2010
The MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport, the world’s fastest series-produced tire on the racetrack1, will be launched worldwide beginning in January 2011.

Designed for the sportiest series-produced cars as well as for vehicles specially tuned for ultra-high performance, this new MICHELIN tire integrates the full range of expertise and know-how developed by Michelin in the leading international endurance races, and in particular the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport was designed to accomplish one purpose: deliver the ultimate driving experience while ensuring maximum safety even in extreme conditions of use. This outstanding combination of driving enjoyment and safety performance proved decisive in the product development phases conducted with Porsche, BMW M (the sports division of the Munich-based carmaker) and Ferrari.

The exceptional potential of the MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport, which is designed for the most demanding conditions of use on the road, is derived directly from the skills and capabilities of Michelin’s motorsports teams. The technological breakthroughs that have enabled Michelin to score 13 consecutive wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans have been transferred to the MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport with the goal of providing motorists with the ultimate in driving pleasure.

To improve the tire’s road-holding and braking ability and thereby its overall safety performance, even in the most extreme conditions, while also providing excellent mileage, Michelin has uniquely combined three technologies, including two developed for tires used at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: the Twaron® fiber belt as well as the Bi-Compound tread band and the Variable Contact Patch 2.0, both of which were derived from innovations validated and used in endurance racing (more technical details on page 9). The combination has produced compelling results that are apt to win over the most demanding manufacturers of cars in the ultra high-performance segment. As a result, the new MICHELIN tire has key advantages that enable it to rise to the challenge posed by its predecessor, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport PS2, which was certified as original equipment on more than 200 vehicles.

In line with Michelin’s innovation strategy, the MICHELIN Pilot Super Sport delivers an optimal balance of several distinct performance characteristics. This ability to combine maximum safety, even in extreme conditions of use, with driving pleasure and excellent mileage is the result of an R&D commitment unrivaled in the tire industry (nearly €500 million a year allocated to the Michelin Technology Center).

Michelin’s 13 consecutive years of Le Mans victories are encapsulated in a new supercar tyre one that’s not only quicker and more predictable yet also better in both dry and wet conditions.

The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre was developed to accomplish dual purposes. To deliver the ultimate driving experience while at the same time ensuring maximum safety even in extreme conditions of use. This outstanding combination of driving enjoyment and safety performance proved decisive in the product development phases conducted with Porsche, BMW M division and Ferrari.

In track testing at a 2.7 kilometre circuit in Germany the new Michelin Pilot Supersport shaved 5 seconds of lap times set by its predecessor, the Pilot Sport 2.

The tyre was developed using the experience of 13 consecutive Le Mans wins - the ultimate test of a tyre's performance in both wet and dry conditions as well as of its longevity.

It replaces the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 and offers the wet grip of the Pilot Sport 3. So it’s as quick as a Pilot Sport Cup with better wet surface water displacement.

To improve the tire’s road-holding and braking ability and thereby its overall safety performance, even in the most extreme conditions, while also providing excellent mileage, Michelin has uniquely combined three technologies, including two developed for tyres used at the 24 hours of Le Mans: the Twaron® fibre belt as well as the bi-compound tread band and the variable contact Patch 2.0, both of which were derived from innovations validated and used in endurance racing. The combination has produced exceptional results that are likely to win over the most demanding manufacturers of cars in the ultra high-performance segment.

As a result, the new Michelin Pilot Super Sports tyre has key advantages that enable it to rise to the challenge posed by its predecessor, the Michelin Pilot sport PS2, which was certified as original equipment on more than 200 vehicles.

Intended for drivers who want exceptional driving enjoyment and safety – whether for day-to-day use or track days– the Michelin Pilot Super Sport is designed for series-produced super sport models and street-legal cars that have been tuned and modified for ultra high-performance.

In a test conducted in 2010 by TUV, The Michelin Pilot Super Sport outperformed its five leading competitors in speed and dry road-holding the independent testing organization, using size 245/40 ZR 18 y and 235/35 ZR 19 y tyres.

Bi-Compound Tread

Originally developed for racing tires, the innovation of bi-compound tread uses different rubber compounds on the left and right sides of the tread.

On the outside, a unique, carbon black-reinforced elastomer (developed specifically for the 24 hours of Le Mans) ensures exceptional endurance when corners are tight.

On the inside, a latest-generation, high-grip elastomer enables the tyre (on wet surfaces) to break through the water’s surface and adhere to even the slightest irregularity in the road.

Variable Contact Patch

Thanks to the latest digital simulation software used in the aeronautics and automobile industries, pressure, and consequently temperatures, are spread evenly across the tire’s contact patch. Although the patch’s shape changes when cornering, the amount of rubber in contact with the road remains the same. This helps prefent overheating and gives consistent and predictable grip.

Twaron® Belt

A high-density ultra light fibre used in cutting-edge equipment for sports such as tennis, sailing and mountain biking – as well as in aeronautics, protective military gear and motorsports – Twaron® provides the Michelin Pilot Super Sport with superior high-speed stability.

Due to its variable tension, the belt tightens the tread more than the shoulders. as a result, centrifugal force is more effectivelyovercome and pressure is more evenly distributed. A key feature of Twaron® is its high grip-resistance. Strong and light at the same time, Twaron® is five times more resistant than steel at equivalent weight.

Michelin tests supercar tyre in Dubai

Richard Whitehead

Last Updated: Nov 24, 2010

A supercar tyre requires a supercar for testing and a Ferrari F458 Italia certainly does the job. The Italian car was just one of a number of exotics used to put Michelin's new tyre through its paces.
Pawan Singh / The National

Try as you might, it is hard to look at tyres with any great wonder and affection. Michelin, however, might just have changed this with the launch of its new product, the Pilot Super Sport.

According to Gary Guthrie, the group vice president of marketing at the French company, this is no less than a revolution in tyre design. "It is the fastest and safest tyre ever built for a road car," he said at the global launch of the rubber, which took place at Dubai's Autodrome this week.

Tough talk, then, from one of the leading purveyors of the auto world's necessary but unsung heroes.

Early tyres were made of iron and used on carts and wagons. A wheelwright would heat the tyre on a forge and place it over a wooden wheel before quenching the red-hot metal with water, causing it to contract and hold fast. The first rubber tyre was invented in 1887 by Scotsman John Boyd Dunlop for use on his son's bicycle. Since then, tyres have come a long way.

Guthrie says the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport represents the biggest leap in tyre design for a generation: "It is the fastest tyre in the world, and it wasn't me who first said that," he explained. "It was tested by German standards agency TÜV, who found it to be the safest tyre on dry roads, but they also recorded that in more demanding road conditions, such as in the wet, it brakes three metres shorter than its predecessor. That can sometimes be the difference between life and death."

Indeed, at Le Mans this year, one set of the tyres did 627km at an average speed of 243kph - four times the distance than a tyre manages in Formula One. Overall, during the 24-hour race, the Pilot Super Sport broke three longevity world records and reduced the number of tyre sets required by a car to 11 from 14.

Coming from Michelin's annual €500 million (Dh2.5 billion) budget for research and development, it has taken four years to develop and will be sold at the same price as its predecessor. It is meant for "enthusiastic drivers who want to combine driving pleasure with safety", according to Guthrie.

The model was initially developed in partnership with Porsche: "They are extremely demanding; that's why we love working with them," said Guthrie. Over the past four years, AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, BMW's M and Ferrari have also come on board to develop versions of the tyre for their own cars.

The Pilot Super Sport uses a combination of a high-density fibre known as Twaron and bi-compound tread. The Twaron is used as part of the process to tighten the tread more than the shoulders of the tyre to give it more of a flattened appearance, rather than an arched one. As a result, centrifugal force that causes this arching is more effectively overcome and pressure is more evenly distributed. Another key feature of Twaron is that it is five times tougher than steel at the equivalent weight.

The tyre also uses different rubber compounds on the left and right sides of the tread. The reinforced outside is designed for endurance when the corners are tight, while the high-grip inside is designed to break through surface water and adhere to even the slightest irregularity in the road.

By this point, many people tend to get a glazed look in their eyes and switch off from the subject of tyres. But past the dry facts and the theories and engineering, there's one thing that makes the science of tyres really interesting, and that's actual testing.

In this case, Michelin test drivers had a field day, with a Gumpert, Koenigsegg, Lamborghini Gallardo, a few racing Porsches, a couple of 458 Italias, a 1,015hp Mercedes-Benz SL and gullwing SLS, some BMW Ms and an Audi R8 putting the tyres through their paces.

"We will approach these laps as we would in testing," Pierre-Antoine, Michelin's AMG specialist test driver, told us as we set off in the SLS. "Our first lap is to warm up, so that we know we have a benchmark."

The second lap saw an increase in pace to a 120kph average and an illustration of hard cornering - namely yanking the wheel to the left and right and showing the response. What was interesting here is how highly tuned a tyre test driver's perceptions must be as he senses the most minute changes in behaviour. From our point of view, we could feel some quite significant grip below.

The next, faster lap was devoted to understeer and throttle lift-off. Pierre-Antoine would simulate a corner taken way too fast - one you would normally have no chance coming out of in one piece - and showed how the tyre did have an uncanny ability to regain grip within a split second and pull through back to the parabola. In a lift-off situation, with heavy oversteer, the same again was true. The smell of rubber was by now filling the cabin.

But the hot lap would provide the substance. With an AMG-tuned 6.3L V8 engine coiling and then exploding through the corners, even as a passenger you can feel the tremendous grip from this rubber, even when the wheels are being positioned - with all due respect to Pierre-Antoine - by a maniac.

This was a test driver who was doing everything he could to get it wrong: wrong line, wrong approach speed and wrong adjustments. But still, each time - all at very high speeds - he would rely on the Michelins to pull the SLS back into shape, which they did rather effectively.

This might well have been the moment when tyres finally became sexy. Even on F1 cars, they are just the black things that get their own puffer coats; commentators talk more about team tyre strategy than tyre technology. But when all your senses can pick up on all the hard work your rubbers are carrying out on your behalf, you are finally ready to accept your tyres as things of beauty.

Thanks for the post.

I'll definitely get a set when my MPSC's run out.

I like the chart that is a comparo vs the MPSC's. Seems like they have a winner again with this model.

Is the Super Sport the PS2 replacement, meaning that the PS3 is not?
If so what is the PS3 role?

looks like they will offer the correct size for the 997.2 GT3. Hopefully they are much better in the rain then current OEM sport cups, which are down right scary.

Why doesn't anyone make any 305-315-325-335's that I like in 18" ?. Toyo stopped making the RA1's, Nitto's NT01 are not optimal with only 30 on rear tires, no Michelin Cups, no Hankook's, no BFG's. Really running out of options. Don't like Hoohoos since I drive to the track on my R rated tires and Hoosiers are just too soft and too easy to puncture. I "trailer" one extra set of spare tires, but if I have to go to the track on street tires, I'm back to not having a spare set at the track. Soon my stash of RA1's will be depleted.....

They are out of fashion, 19s are the new 18s.

I just hope the PS2 is not free of high aromatic oils and eventually next year will be outlawed and replaced by the better PSS. If that happens PSS will be availiable in every size PS2s are.
If they just continue the PS2 with a possible rubber compound change then I don't think we ll ever see the PSS in decent 18 sizes.

Now that I went street friendly I can't find tyres. Go figure with the SOB's
