If, because the interior is smoother than the metal air box, there was any power gain, it would be so small as to be totally insignificant. On the other hand, the weight saving is possibly the largest single item achievable for this engine. Having said that, for quite large dollars, additional lbs could be removed from the engine on a bit by bit (static and rotating) basis, e.g., metal matrix composite components, titanium components, other carbon components, etc.

Exactly Robert!

Besides it is not even sure that you would see a small gain.. maybe a small loss depending on the unique characteristics of the intake and shape of air flow path..
A small increase in the surface roughness for cylinders or sphere like objects may actually decrease the drag coefficient and alter turbulent flow.
The penalty of the increase in drag from a higher friction surface is much smaller than the gain from the pressure drag due to separation drop and hence increased velocity of air entering the cylinders in our case.
There are a lot of studies available using Reynolds number with valid results comparing drag coefficients for rough and smooth surfaces and their effects on turbulent flow.
Porsche has decided on newer cars that the plenums and intake remain a bit rough with lets say micro dimps. I don’t think they did that by accident.
In any case we are talking about very small ± hp differences. The real gain is the weight loss !
keep it coming and give us here an update on current weight. : )

And, indeed, and not accidentally, the inside of the carbon fiber air box is a bit rough but a bit smoother than the original (and, of course, it can be made more rough or more, even completely, smooth). In any event, it will be placed on a Porsche dyno and compared with the results from the metal air box.

As to weight, my old 964 has dropped below 2000 lbs.

The airbox is as beautiful as your other pieces. Do you have an aim for a final target weight, or will you just keep going until you find no more parts to change?

As you can see from the Cartridge label on the RSR Airbox pictured in an issue Race Engine Technology magazine, I am somewhat familiar with it.
