Default 2011 Le Mans

Currently in France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We spent today checking out the track, where we were able to see the cars on pit row. Race starts tomorrow (Saturday) a 3 pm. It will be preceded by a short 'Race Le Mans Legend' & 'Race Challenge Ferrari Trophee Pirelli'.

In the Prototype category (LM P1), Audi is battling it out with Peugeot. Porsche is represented in the GT category, with five 911 RSR's in 'professional' and three RSR's in 'amateur'. Flying Lizard has a car in each. Porsche competitors include Ferrari 458's & 430's, BMW M3's, Corvette ZR1's, Aston Martin Vantages, Lotus Evoras & a Ford GT - Doran.

The entire field is rather small (maybe 56 cars) - nothing like the 24 Hours of Nurburgring we saw Chris Harris participate in a gt3 RS last year. No run of the mill 911's like I remember in years past at La Sarthe. However, the atmosphere at the track is incredible. And tomorrow they are expecting record breaking crowds. Will add photos on my return to Carmel next week. z356 (currently in France)

Enjoy the race. I'll be watching what I can on TV. I just wished the F1 race and Lemans were not on the same weekend. How am I supposed to watch the F1 race when I am all nackered (sp?) after staying up all night long watching the Lemans race.

Speed TV should be covering parts of the race and I plan on seeking online coverage as well when Speed TV is covering something else (like their love of NASCAR).

That's what a Tivo/DVR is for.

I don't have enough disk space on my DVR to record 8+ hours. Of course it remains to be seen if I actually stay up all night long. 2 years ago I did. Last year I didn't.

If you're an Audi fan, or even if you're not, Audi will be streaming the entire 24-hr race with in-car views and live telemetry here:

Go Audi! I love the look of the R18's. Hope they prove to be more reliable than at the Spa race.

55 cars is the traditional size of Le Mans. The entry in garage 56 is a demonstration entry. I assume the maximum of 55 entries has to do with number of garages. There were a number of reserve entries that have not made it into the race.

Great move, McNish. Super driver, truly epic bonehead move.
