Question Centerlock failure

Centerlock failed on my 2010 GT3 (11k miles) on the track at Summit Point. Happened after completed braking in t1, just started turn. Felt a clunk and rear dipped lower, then car did a 180. Luckily no one too close behind and flagman got everyone slowed down.

No body damage, never dragged on the ground as the tire stayed under it (ruined my new R6, also killed my BBS).

I am looking for info from other GT3 owners that this has happened to.

Has anyone else had this happen? And what did Porsche do? Did they fix it for free?

Thanks

DAAAAMN. first time hearing of that, and a lot of people have been tracking their CL's.

How many miles on car/wheels? I'm assuming CL's were properly torqued, checked regularly, and no aggressive suspension mods. if so, i'm thinking manufacturing defect, but the fact it happened on the track (with hoosiers) may prove complicated in terms of PNA doing anything. may need to rely on dealer goodwill for this.

Same BBS here, no issues.

Anything leading up to faillure? Vibration? You sure it was "locked"? My left rear has become hard to "lock" get the lock to pop out, the other 3 are easy.
I hope that it is OK that I shared this on a couple of other forums to see if you are indeed the first to have the displeasure of losing one..

Woa... sorry this happened to you. What were your torque specs leading up to this incident? When was the last time you checked the torque, and was the security lock properly "popped"?

Given the extent of damage (wheel hub, PCCB rotors x 2, lock mechanism, potential suspension damage) your dealer may try to weasel out of covering this incident. Document everything and be prepared for a long fight.

Sad to see all this but hope you'll sort this out ASAP!

WOW. It appears that the entire thread housing sheared off! I am not familiar with this having occurred in the past.

Had you had the car in to the dealer for the recall?

Please keep us up to date on your experience with this one.

Ive heard some ridiculous excuses PNA has been using with GT3 warranty issues. If this isnt covered under warranty, I would go postal.....

I am sick looking at this picture. Warranty from PNA? For a tracked car? Ha! Never happen.

Funny how all the product literature shows the car on a track, but the warranty specifically excludes track use of any kind.

I still stick by my assertion that the C/L on this car are poorly executed and should never have been put on a street car.

Please report this to the NHTSA, I will be suprised if we don't see many more failures as these cars start to rack up miles. Basically, we are all beta testers for this poorly thought out bit of marketing fluff.

AP, are you still reading these forums????????

i really wonder why even consider getting centerlocks if on any car dealer can substitute it with normal 5 lugs wheels?

Default Oh No!

I am not liking this one bit, however I am happy to hear you are ok and the car did not have any other damage after the incident.

Hmmmm......looks like metal fatigue in the hub thread area (as they are gone!!!).......this can't be good.......overtorquing?.......Or more likely the aluminum CL hubs may not be standing up to the new (significantly higher!) torque spec of 444ft.lb (600 N.m). GT3DE: Did you find the CL nut?

I'm sure PCNA will dig into it, they don't have much choice on this one.

Keep us informed.

Best Regards,
Doug N.

Damn, very sorry to hear this, but glad everyone was alright. For anyone who hasn't been to summit main, turn 1 is after a long straight where speeds can hit 150 so OP is very lucky. Like others have said, did you take it in for the recall yet? Hope everything works out!

Ouch.
I just got a supplement to the manual for my '11 GT3 stating the torque specifications for race circuit use. No recall on my CLs though. Funny how they tell you what to do on the track, but then state they won't cover any failure on it - I'm sure you could fight them in court and win though, but what a hassle.
Good luck and keep us informed.
