Clarke - it is rare when you have to opportunity (coupled with the ability) to do something like this. The time we have with our parents is limited and once they're gone, that's it. You should feel pretty good about this, and so will your father.

I tend to be the biggest spender (biggest idiot) at whatever shop I go to (the one exception was a year ago at Orbit, much bigger spenders there than me) because I have so many cars and hate working on them myself -- so yes I can get/have it done. This is not a concours de elegance restoration. This is a daily driver with shiny exterior, rebuilt engine and fresh interior.

D!ck. When Clarke shows up at the shop, mine gets punted to second in line. Luckily they only have small things left on my racecar build to do this week.

was at shop on Tuesday but car was away at paint shop getting "cut in" (they said that means that they are doing all the overspray - door jams, trunk, fender wells, engine compartment, etc) and then bringing it back to shop later this week to finish the build. Saw the engine being built (partial rebuild - top end) which will be done by end of day on Wednesday.

Clarke,

Way to go.
Echo everyone's comments above.
Make sure to capture the moment the handover occurs.
Seriously think of having a friend with a good camera be there to take some pictures.
Fantastic tribute by a son to his father.

I love everything about this post! The history, the chase, the restoration. Everything!

I located my fathers 1968 corvette convertible and im tempted to do the same. Although a porsche would be cooler!
