Dad's Bday / Father Day June 15/16, 2013
So in 1975 my Dad bought a metallic blue 911S with "cork" interior. I was 9 years old. I was hooked on Porsche from that day onward. 250,000 miles later the car was old and worn out. It sat in my parents garage for years collecting dust and mice and rust. Dad took it to a restoration shop in the 90's and was quoted $50k for mint restoration - not including mechanicals. He gave it to charity and collected a $10k write-off.
Three weeks ago I was talking with a family friend that is into cars big-time. He used to race NASCAR and helped me get started racing the ovals in Late Model stock cars in 1999. We stay in touch as he has a thing for all things cars/racing. He has a place near Daytona and was fooling with me as to why I didn't enter my GT3 in the 24hour race earlier this year. I told him to come to a Sebring Chin event and I would take him for a ride. I also mentioned that I was amassing quite a number of P-cars. We talked of my recent purchase of a 73 long hood. Which led into my very slow to start project of building a 73 RSR tribute car. I have the engine/trans/suspension but not the tub yet............
He said wouldn't it be cool if you built the 73 RSR tribute car out of your Dad's old car (the 75 911S). I laughed and said yeh that would be cool - if I knew where it was or what happened to it. He then said, "Clarke, you don't know where your Dad's car is? Why it is at our shop in Daytona. Your Dad donated it to our non-profit years ago." I was silent for a while. I had no idea he had the car.
His son had bought the car a few years ago from the non-profit and started a hot rod project. He had replaced the rust front clip, sold off the Fuchs, engine and trans. Then it sat. And then he lost interest. And it sat.
Until 2 weeks ago when I had it picked up in Daytona and delivered to Viringina. Last Thursday (04.10.2013) I dropped it off at Intersport Performance in McLean, VA (who does all things Porsche for me in Virginia). One week later and the suspension is done, and car is off to paint/body shop. A 3.2 is being built (stock specs) now. Car will be remade to look stock original much like the picture below I found somewhere on the internet (minus the mud flaps).
Car will be finished in time for Dad's 78th BDay on June 15th.
Pictures are from day it was dropped at Intersport.
Yeh, yeh, yeh - not a GT3 topic - so sue me. This is the only forum I involve myself in, I don't know anyone in the old P-car forms.

Thats probably one of the coolest stories I've read in the 10 years I've been around these parts. I have a 71 Fiat Spider tucked in the corner of my garage with a similar story. I'll turn to it once I get my GT3...

Thanks fellas.
Dad lives a few hours away. This past weekend he was in town so I showed him my new-to-me 73 911T and took him for a ride. He said it seemed small. I told him it is the same size as his old car. Then I let him drive and he had a blast. He said it brought back memories...

That's awesome. Shows that your parents raised you well.
My brother and I bought my Dad a 997 Cup for his 65th, and the expression on his face was worth every penny. Your Dad will dig it, for sure.
She looks pretty good in the first pic.

Wow, what a great story. Your dad must be proud to have you as a son.
I hope you'll post after-restauration photos of the car... MAybe you should have a camera ready when you give it to your dad so that you can take a picture of his reaction when he sees what you got him.
