997.2 GT3 to 991 GT3 - Would You trade?

Default 997.2 GT3 to 991 GT3 - Would You trade?

So... I recently came across a potential opportunity to sell my 2010 GT3 and get a 2014 991 GT3. Here's what both cars are like:

- Mine: 2010 GT3; 16k miles, Atlas Gray, almost every conceivable factory option (including PCCB's, full leather/alcantara interior, cornering lights, DEM's, front lift, full Cargraphic exhaust w/ cats, manifolds, ecu reprogram, etc etc)

- Opportunity: 2014 991 GT3; 2k miles, similarly fully optioned; Black, full leather / alcantara / carbon interior, PCCB's, cornering lights, red deviated stitching, front lift, full Cargraphic exhaust w/ cats, manifolds, ecu reprogram, etc etc; sticker-wise this 991 GT3 would probably run upwards of 170k in the US)

Know the current owner of the 991 well. His is one of the 1st 991 GT3's produced, with the engine swapped by a flown-in mechanic from Stuttgart.

I absolutely Love my 997.2 GT3; I think this car is the Duck's Guts; adore the mezger engine and the magical manual tranny. But I'm not indifferent to this swap possibility - effort would be the 997.2 GT3 sale price + about $32k on top. Can't afford both.

Thoughts????

I think the 2014s will always have a bad rap and the 997 cars will continue to rise in value.

I will always love rowing the gears in my 997.2. That being said tHeres something about having a new toy which is hard to beat.

Tough call.

I have a 997.1 GT3 RS... And a 15 GT3. They are completely different animals. The 997 is a P51 Mustang while the 991 is an F22 Raptor. Have taken both cars to Sebring and as much as I love going through gears and the sound of the Mezger, driving the 991 on the track was a very different experience.

Did you drive the 991 GT3 yet?

Depends on what you want. After driving the 991 at the Autobahn Country Club last month, it felt faster and cornered a much better and there was no thought about going fast I just did as I had no worries about the next up shift, down shift or throttle blip. The cars are night and day. But I'm not on a race track with my 997 so I could t justify the change. However, if I decide I don't want to shift anymore a 991 may make it into my garage.

The 991GT3 is damn fast no doubt!!! I mean playing paddle games and NO lift with upshifts ... hell yeah the car is fricken fast ... BUT I have a little 997.1 RS pumpkin for you.
I see you're from Florida. Come to PBOC event at Homestead Jun 13-14. Lets have fun. My old technology vs. the playstation 991GT3.

How do you use your car? Weekend car? Track a lot? Daily drive?
If you DD go for it! It will make your life a lot easier.
If you are super fast on track and looking for faster lap times- 991gt3
If you enjoy your 997gt3 on weekends and track a few times per year- keep your 997.

Setting aside driving experience, for that implied price spread I would keep your car. No way your car + $32k = early production 2014 991.

OP,
you want a fast car that drives you then the 991GT3 is for you. Drive skill is at at a minimum requirement with the 991gt3.
If you're fast it's not the driver ... it's the car technology.
Us poor boys need to peddle faster.
No doubt technology is great!!!

I do very few track days at all - if any...

I often daily drive the GT3, about 2x week, sometimes 3x week. Home-Office route is a 15-mile, unpatrolled, fast mountain toll highway with long sweeping curves and 3 tunnels. When I'm alone, and traffic is light, I usually drive very fast. I love how the 997.2 GT3 rewards me when I learn to master it just a bit further out of a very fast (140 mph) turn. I love rowing through the gears and love how the Mezger engine can wake up fine one day, or pissed off and coughing up smoke the next day. Roadwise, it almost never rains here. Hard to not take the GT3; but I'm somewhat disciplined, so I still take the old Cayenne S to the office more often than the GT3....

Weekend drives, and every now and then, 2 to 4-day scenic road-trips.

iIf a $32k spread is too much, what would be more acceptable? $25k?

I know, and have this deep down feeling, that in a cpl of years, the 997.2 will be worth more money than the 991 GT3. But still a tough call...

Cost difference/spread is country related so don't go off US dollars and market!

Drive it if possible, it will either give you the James May fiz in the groine more than your current car or it will not. Decission made.

If you can't drive it prior but WANT it and have the money.. go for it. Theres no chance of it not being a great car and great drivers car- it will stand the test of time just like your current car.

These two cars are different routes to the same end only seperated by age and tech.

Thks for the varied advice, all !. UR20v's arguments specially, make lots of sense.

I'll take the 991 for a long spin tomorrow, so this will probably undo some of the brain confusion...

I was faced with the exact same scenario. Get a 991 GT3 or buy my old 997.2 GT3 back.

Did tons of research, rode and drove some 991 GT3's. Initial thought was the car felt really big sitting inside, and on the track, although fast as *****, it was lacking any passion. Just point, press gas, turn wheel. Really felt like Porsches version of a Nissan GT-R. But alas I found myself still willing to buy it. It looks badass, the new and greatest, and like I mentioned, fast as ****. But then....

I met my friend for coffee who has a white 997.2 GT3. We were bored, so I asked if I could drive it since it had been a while since I drove my old car. Turned the key and the mezger came alive along with the rattles, burbles and vibrations the 997's are known for. I had the biggest smile on my face. No words could describe it. It just felt right. Perfect sized car, full of character, and a refusal to be obsolete. We are very blessed to have the ability to own and drive these cars.

If you have or get a chance to purchase one. Do it. It's a dead mans car....

I'm in the drive it a couple times a week, a few DE's over the year crowd and definitely will keep a 997 GT3 as long as I can afford one

The engagement is the key factor for me, have a 2013 S5 Convertible for a DD and although a great car for the intended purpose it is dull and boring. So the 997 takes away all the dullness, and adds spirit to the few drives I take. I love the rattle on idle, the rough steering, and the old manual box The car creates instant connection.

As long as I can operate a clutch and can afford to keep her, the 997 GT3 / RS chassis is a keeper in my book.

The 997.2 GT3 is a very special car. For sure you will be faster in a 991 GT3 for the obvious reasons but the 997 is more fun.

The dealer told me on a recent visit that they had a 991 GT3 in that needed a 3rd engine! Engine light came on on track... Germany said replace engine.
