Default jack stands or floor jack?

for those who regularly swap wheels on your own, do u prefer to first place 2 or 4 jack stands, or just do each corner at a time with a floor jack?

contemplating which method, as more tools (eg, jackpoint stands) necessary for the former.

pros/cons of either method?

.1 is easy to get on 4 stands due to rear center jack point, regular stands are fine. .2 not so easy and not ok with regular axle stands. If you’re just swapping wheels it’s probably a wash, but doing brake work better get the whole car up. There are lots of posts on the procedure.

Get a quick jack setup if you swap often and do some light DIY work. Makes getting your car in the air super easy on limited space

I've had a lot of luck using 4 Jackpoint stands. I can get the entire car off the ground in 5 to 10 minutes. Great for swapping wheels, not really high enough to get under the car though.

This. Roughly a $1.1k investment, but well worth it. Quick, easily stored, and you can even drop an engine using a Quick Jack. I use it with all my cars for oil changes, brakes, wheel swaps, and anything else where it is easier off the ground.

ya, not planning to do any work under the car or on the brakes myself, this is really just for swapping back/forth winter wheels.

i like the jackpoint stands, as they seem to work well. that said, for my sole need it does sound like overkill and doesn't really get me any greater benefit over using a floor jack one by one for each corner.

If that's the case a floor jack will suffice. I've done this in the past and it's quick and easy. I used lift pucks on the jack points just to make sure I don't damage anything using a floor jack. There is a person on this forum that sells a set of four for around $50. They insert into the oval slot and you can twist them so they hold. If you invest in these, just make sure you remove them after you are finished.....ask me how I know

i have a lift
and I have 2 jacks and many jackstands.
Yet, most of the time when just swapping / "rotating" wheels I;
  • Loosen all lug bolts
  • lift one side of the car with rear jack point.
  • R&R wheels......... quickly.
  • Fasten lug bolts to about 60 ft/lbs
  • Move to the other side and repeat.
  • Torque to spec.
I do chock the opposite side wheels when doing the work, but that's about it.
That has worked for at least 75 wheel changes.
Best idea? No, but we do what we do.

Craig

I borrowed a friend's Quick Jack for a big project on my car I'm currently working on and I'm never going back to using jack stands. I'll definitely be buying one of these now. I can have the car in the air in under 5 minutes.

quick jack is awesome... definitely the favored choice for larger projects that need the car in the air. however, overkill if all that's needed is wheel swaps.

Like some others, I've gone through the gamut of ways to lift your car: jack only, jack + jack stands, QuickJack, and finally a 2 post lift. My thought is the following: If all you're doing to swapping wheels/tires, a good functioning jack is all you need. If any corner of the car is going to be up in the air for more than 2-3 mins or you're sticking your head under the car for any reason, you should be using jack stands at a minimum.

If you've already got a decent jack and stands look at getting a pair of Liftbars

Another vote for quickjack. I can’t believe I used to use jacks/stands for so many years. I still throw a couple jack stands under for backup though.

Also have “jackpoint stands” which I used prior to quick jack. Love them, great product however haven’t used since I discovered quickjack

I have a Quickjack and I'm disappointed in the quality. Leaking hydraulic fittings and air canisters that that don't maintain required pressure for more than a day. Had it in the shipping box for a little over a year before using so Quickjack refuses to warrant it. Typical Chinese product with poor quality control.
