Porsche Powerhouses GMG Racing and Orbit Racing Partner Up for 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 at Daytona


SANTA ANA, CALIF. (January 2012) – Two leading names in Porsche racing and tuning in North America, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) and Orbit Racing, are coming together to enter the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 at Daytona. James Sofronas, President and owner of GMG Racing, will take the wheel for the landmark event alongside co-drivers Bret Curtis, Shane Lewis, Nicholas Armindo and Lance Willsey.


GMG and Orbit Racing will debut the No. 32 GMG/Orbit/Spectra Resources Rolex Spec 2012 Porsche 997 GT-3 Cup Car for the race, bringing together their superlative track car expertise for the first time after both have separately fielded cars and teams in prior events.


“Orbit Racing is very happy to further develop the relationship with GMG Racing,” states Obit Racing owner Rodger Hawley. “Orbit and GMG have been working together on street car projects and now we have the opportunity to share the experience of both companies on the racetrack as well.”

All five of the drivers lined up to pilot the No. 32 GMG/Orbit/Spectra Porsche 997 in the GT Class at the Rolex 24 at Daytona have taken the wheel at the event before, giving the team a strong driving profile. Sofronas is an experienced Porsche driver whose career highlights include victories across numerous racing events, series and championships. Sofronas was practically a fixture on the podium during the 2011 SCCA Pro Racing Pirelli World Challenge season with 2 prior Rolex 24 starts.


Shane Lewis has been racing since 1989 and has won multiple races in IMSA, GRAND-AM, SCCA Pro Racing and has podium finishes, class victories and overall wins throughout the world. Nicolas Armindo started his career in French formula racing in 2001 and has earned a reputation as a fierce Porsche competitor, winning the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup Championship in Germany. Bret Curtis has been competing across the U.S. and Europe and has raced with GMG in prior seasons, including last year’s Rolex 24 where they ran as high as 3rd with less than 3 hours to go. Lance Willsey brings with him extensive experience on the Daytona track, having raced it several times in prior years as part of the Grand-Am Rolex series and has multiple Rolex 24 starts.
