3.6 vs 3.8

3.6 vs 3.8
I am looking at 2009 and up TT. The '09s have a 3.6 liter engine and I think it changes to a 3.8 in '10....is that right? Also the '09s have a tiptronic and the '10 has the PDK, have I got this right? The tiptronic is not a dual clutch like the PDK, is that right?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I believe you have that right
Should also note the 2007-2009 997.1 turbo all have the GT 1 race derived engines, the 2010-present turbos have a new engine design

As I read here on different posts, the '09 has the M64 engine, 3.6, and the '10 and up the M97, 3.8 engine. Also the M64 is considered race proven and a true dry sump. Some posts indicate that it is more easily worked on. However, some also claim the M97 TT with PDK will out perform, and in straight line racing, the M64TT. But the M64 is not DI as I understand it like the M97. So it begs the question on which model would one really like to pursue, an '09TT or a '10 and up TT?? Is the improvement of the PDK a deciding factor in making this choice? And lastly, how does the Tiptronic compare to the PDK?
Thanks.
Thanks.

06-09 are the same Except for PCM. The 09 got the new and improved PCM.
In 10 there were major changes like:
1. engine (3.8, DFI and revised sump)
2. Addition of the PDK
3. LED lights
4. lower weight (40-50lbs?)
The Tip and PDK are totally different. The Tip is more of a traditional tranny w/ a torque converter while the PDK is a true double clutch. FOr being a auto tranny the tip is very good, smooth and fast. The PDK is a step up in performance. Porsche now only offers the Tip on the Cayenne.

The PDK is a true double-clutch transmission with extremely fast shifts. Essentially, one clutch handles gears 1, 3, 5 & 7 and the other, gears 2, 4 & 6. The transmission per-selects the next gear so the sift occurs on opening one clutch and closing another. It is a superior and faster transmission than the old Tiptronic.
Basic rules of thumb:
1. Purchase the newest TT you can afford.
2. That being said, the Mezger Gt1 engine is a thing of beauty and has its own heritage appeal to those that have one...
3. Go manual if you like rowing through the gears (like I do...) or go PDK if you want more of an automatic ride. For manual, you can extend your search down into 2007 and there are some great low-miliage deals out there to be had. For PDK, you are looking at 2010 and greater and will inherit the new DFI engine. Is it faster? Yes, as it has more BHP and the PDK. It's going to come down to your price range in the end. Who cares about if one will beat the other. If you really want more torque and HP then you get into modding.
4. If you like modifying, then the 2007-09 M64 engine is more suited to modifying.
Have fun!

Thanks, that helps me in my understanding of the differences due to the model years. I looked at an '09 and the service manager said the engine was the same as the '09 Carrera, and I thought that was wrong, that's why I am here learning. Funny how the people that are supposed to know.....don't. Really instills confidence in the people that work on your car right???

The choice is often put like this: If you want an automatic, then go with the 2010 - PDK. If you want a manual, then go with the 2009.
