Key Differences Between .1 and .2 TT...

In addition to the LED tail lights, the .2 has LED DRLs in place of the fog lights on the .1. Additionally, the .2 has the option of ventilated seats. The US 2009 model was a transitional year. It has the engine, transmission choices and the lighting of the .1 models, it has PCM 3.0 , the ventilated seat option, and the center lock wheel option like the .2 models.

On my .2 the fogs are the DRLs as well.

I have some even less beefy but great anectotal support of my .2. 74000km, daily driven summer and Canada winter. 7000 track kms. Absolutely zero problems. The suspension as is a great on the track, for the .1s to keep up they definitely need to mod theirs. Also the DFI so far has been a rock. The longer the DFI has been out the more the fears of it somehow being inferior have yet to come to fruition. As much as all the Mezger fans want it to fall apart, it's turned out to be a great engine when people really dig into it. Love my .2 manual.

my thinking?
The .2 transmission does just fine with the power the car has and a bit more. If you want 1,000 hp, maybe its not the right choice, but then really, you are on the fringe of lunacy anyway.
The leather quality is nothing special in these cars anyway. Leather in the air cooled cars wears much better.
As for suspension, I know there are some differences in the shocks, not sure what, but I'd think the control arms and such would be similar, save for maybe some updated part numbers with minor running changes.

as for automation, i generally agree its a bit much. I don't want active motor mounts, torque vectoring, or rear steering. I think the 997 series, if ordered properly, is a good combo of tech vs. interaction/engagement. Is it in anyway a "raw" car? No, but then my 993 isn't either, so I guess thats a pretty subjective topic.

You should have LED DRLs in the spot where I have incandescent fog lights on my 997.1 turbo. Can you activate this feature using the PCM menus? Maybe this is only the case on cars with dynamic cornering headlights (I don't know here; I'm asking. Did all .2 cars have dynamic headlights?)?

The 993 sports seats are fairly supportive, but the standard stuff is not great. Kind of the same story on the 997 too though
