Default 2016 Autocross Video Thread

It's January and time for a new autocross videos thread! I know these videos don't get many views, but we all love to share them

NASA Mid Atlantic had their first of two chillycrosses today; they tried a new format with separate AM and PM events. Started out WAY cold (25F), but most of the ice melted pretty quickly and it was in the low 50s by the afternoon Was a fun event and a pair of nice fast NASA courses; longer straights and higher top speeds than SCCA autocrosses. I somehow managed to best a pair of national champs codriving a 1LE Camaro for FTD both sessions, so good start for 2016 I hope! My wife did very well in our 987.2S, too.

Still here, too: There was 2' of snow on this site last weekend and I wasn't joking about there literally being ice on the course! The ice was only in one small patch in the slalom and wasn't a big factor, but a lot of water started seeping up through cracks all over the course as it warmed up and made it actually tougher in the afternoon despite temps in the low 50s. Small heats + a lot of runs let most people get heat in their tires, though. The people that brought NT01 and other track tires really suffered, but most of the participants were just there for fun. Including me!

RE-71R had lousy grip the first runs, but by 3+ runs were warm to the touch and performance was pretty good.

I also ran yesterday at front range airport. It was 34 when I got there but 49 when I ran. The Hankook V12's are not good and any time I jumped on the gas the car was sideways. But dam it was fun and I will post a video if I can get it to load to Youtube.

OK here is the video and I got my butt kicked by a GT3. Between the V12's and having a GT3 sway bar in the rear( That makes my car very loose). I only hit 2 cones but DNF 3 or 4 times. What can I say the car was sides way or spinning. This video is my best run and was with PSM on and sport off. I will have the rear bar off before I run again. I was thinking of selling the car to get a Bosxter so I could have a matching set of GT3 swaybars front and back to sell it.

Welp, rolled onto a lake in 35° weather (and rain) for my first ever rallycross / ice runs yesterday. If you think I'm bad at AX, I have zero skill for rally-type driving.

Maybe 25 cones total out on a lake. A "run" took about 3 minutes for people without studded tires. There hasn't been really any snow here, so the lake was like a hockey rink. A groove wore in that provided a hint of grip, but if you got off of it, you were on polished sheet ice and practically beached. The finish was neat, we were trying to thread a needle at about 60mph after a double transition. Took 30+ yards to get the car slowed in the shutdown area, often backwards.

I took video, but I haven't looked at it yet. I bet it's boring. There were a handful of studded tire cars, and I hear they were upwards of 90mph. Impressive to watch, at huge slip angles throwing rooster tails through the whole course.

Here in Mi we still have about 8 weeks to go before the normal cone dodge season starts, so it was a good hit of the 'ol motorsports crackipe in the meantime.

Had our first winter Autocross two weeks ago and even though it is Florida, temps were 35-40 in the morning runs. This is my first Autocross with the new car and the tires were not liking the cold. The lack of grip taught me a lot about the car's balance with the advantage of lower speeds.

Never tried linking a you tube video before. I hope this works.

PCA autocross at El Toro in the GT4. Generally a fun course, on a great surface.

I can't say for sure. We have some good SCCA cars and drivers run the PCA events (Bob Endicott in STR S2000), and the cars PAXs well compared to them on an SS index. Still, small sample size, so we will have to see how it does at a National event, on the hot tires (so far I have just been running Sport Cup 2s).

San Diego Match Tour has no SS entries, and I am not highly motivated to run it as a result, plus I am waiting for the RE71-R to arrive for the front (245/35/20). Pro Solo at El Toro will be its first outing in earnest.
