Default Boxster hardtop or soft top?

Just traded my other project for my first boxster it is a 2000. Top is in pretty bad shape torn and can’t see out of the rear window at all. Looking for the pros and cons of the hard top I love the look and think it would fit my lifestyle a little better but then again I do like the soft. Any info would be appreciated guys. Also if anyone has any leads on either in the Chicago area or know a good shop to repair them it would be great too willing to travel a bit as well.

Why choose when you can have both! I have a 2000 Boxster S with both. Love the option to use either. I’ll be replacing my original soft top for those nice summer days. Hard top for track!

The reason most people own a Boxster is to be able to drop the top on command! If you want a hardtop get a Cayman.

A 2003-2004 top with glass window and a hardtop is the ultimate combination for me.

But I always find more pleasure with the top down !!

(excuse the crappy cell phone photos)

Just a note:
Even if you have a hardtop, you still want to have a functioning soft top in case you run into inclement weather.
A downpour would take out the electronics under the seats; and the repair for that could easily run more than a new soft top.

The plan is definitely to put a new soft top on. Just more or less wanted opinion on if the hard top is worth it if I can find one

The hard tops are a nice plus, but finding one local to where you live will be a challenge (there just aren’t that many out there), and the prices are non trivial (and shipping one from any distance will add significantly to that).

My hardtop is on all winter and for track days on my 2000S. Definitely worth, and the look is total vintage.
Sunny summer days soft top down but standing by.
Don't be discouraged about finding a hardtop. You only need one.

I've been on the hunt for a hardtop for my 01 Boxster S for years but have yet to come across any in my area (Greater Toronto Area.) That, or the owners are asking an arm and a leg.

Having the soft top is nice for the days where the weather is just right, but for the track days, I really would love to have the hardtop.

The going rate for a good hardtop is roughly $2000. Sure, there are deals out there, but there are also people asking $2500+. Don't forget to check whether or not your Boxster is already equipped with the factory spin locks to secure the rear of the hardtop, otherwise you will need to order those too.

Since I bought my own Boxster S as a track focused car, the hardtop was a must. I installed the factory spin locks after buying them from an online Porsche vendor before making the 110 mile drive to buy a hardtop I found. Put the top on with no trouble and drove the car home. As most have correctly said here, it's pretty nice to have both, but I completely removed my entire soft top assembly as mine is a track focused car. A big benefit of not having the soft top and frame is that it makes getting to the engine a bit quicker and simpler.

Enjoy your new Boxster! These are such fun and capable little cars, and boy can they handle!
