2002 Boxter convertable top won't go down
The motor simply does not respond to the button. I'm making sure the emergency brake is on and I've checked the appropriate fuses. It just stop working out of the blue. Is this a common thing with these cars? Do the top motors go bad? I'm looking to explore all possibilites and to try and save some money at the same time. Anyone? Help!

Not sure if its related. I have a similar problem. Yes, my E-Brake light goes on, but I find that I need to sometimes "tweek" how far up its pulled. Likely the switch by the e-brake is failing or needs adj. (in my case) - have you checked that? The switch is about $5.

If nothing is working, I would get to the motor ( really easu, it's in the back center under where the top lid thing comes down) and check with a voltage tester, or just a light or something and see if power is getting to the motor by unhooking the wire harness to the motor and testing it from there. If you are geting power to themotor, then get a new ( or used) motor and install it. I have 0 mechanical knowledge and I tore the top system apart and replaced the top transmission, which looked to be a lot harder than the motor. After me digging into the top system, i think it's pretty simple to figure out, but I would make sure that you are getting power to the motor to begin with... IF not, there is somethng else going on. just my $.02

The microswitch where the top engages with the front catch can also stick.
Latch and unlatch the hood a number of times to see if that clears the problem.
Happens on occasion, zero cost fix.

Thanks for the responses.
Turns out my ebrake light is not coming on with the brake applied and the car turned on. Something I failed to notice when I was changing fuses and generally looking in to the problem. I think this is good news. It now seems like an ebrake issue which means it could just be the ebrake switch.
Now if I could find the switch and swap it out with a new one to see.
Any knowledge on the whereabouts of this switch? Not sure exactly what you're talking about Racer.
Thanks again for the help!
