Verviers, Silverbullet951 is often over here on the Boxster Board doing his "thing", as you had noted. He is often ragging on Boxsters, one way or another.
Sad, really, that he has the need to do this. And even sadder that he tries to be part of the Porsche community.
Oh well...I guess he and his Dad can go kick some dogs now...

Being a multiple 944 owner who could afford a new Porsche (if I were to sell both older ones), I have to say a few things.
First off, like most enthusiasts, I appreciate all of our P-cars for their own unique strengths.
944's are supremely balanced cars, regardless of anything anyone says (most who do say it haven't driven one or are afraid of the social consequences of admitting such preposterous claims).
Personally, I like the retro styling of the 944, I think it is far more what we would call 'timeless' than the Boxster is. Thats not to say I don't think the Boxster is attractive, I do, but in 20 years, will it still look as fresh? The jury is still out.
Also, on my drive home from work every day, I see at least 10 Boxsters and between 3 and 5 996's. They are all goregous cars, don't get me wrong. Seeing a properly maintained 944 on the road is an entirely different subject. Very rarely (maybe once every 2 weeks or so) will I catch a glimpse of another 4 Cyl Porsche (never see 912's or 914's). To me, the rarity is part of the attraction.
Now before you go spouting off production figures, I know, over the model run, almost what 150,000 were made?
Since 1996, how many Boxsters have been built? Isn't the figure approaching 200K? A much more common car.
Personally I don't care if people think I'm too cheap to purchase a late model. I appreciate my car for what it is, and I hope you each do the same with your respective machines.
I wave/flash at every other P-Car I see, rarely getting anything back (except for the 928 guys - always get a response from them. ALWAYS).
In short, we all have different tastes, different perceptions on what makes a great sports car.
Thank God for all the Different Flavors of Porsche.

There was no reason to start with the 944's when we were talking about boxsters. I like boxsters, as I said in my first post in this thread, but I felt the need to defend. I love my car just as you love yours. It doesn't feel good to be criticised does it? No hard feelings ok? I really don't want enemies.

Perhaps, rather than doing a "crap" on Boxsters when there is criticism of the 944 and family, continue to point out their many endearing features. The 944 family performance for money equation is unbeatable, and I for one think they are a very good looking design, just not as good looking as the Boxster <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> (I think it was Will Rogers who said, "There are no ugly women, just some that are more beautiful than others.") I would own one too if I had the room to put it somewhere!
With the price "adjustments" that are claimed to be going on in Porschedom right now (from what I can see, this is not happening around here, though), the Boxster is becoming a better buy. I have observed many 944/928 owners taking a serious look at or actually getting a 986. This is a great thing for the wave, the flash and all other kinds of P-car stuff, because we will have more experienced people with the tradition joining the Boxster ranks.

I agree. I saw the new Boxster S today. I think I'm starting to give in.. I'd never get rid of the 951 but there is definitley room for a boxster. My father keeps insisting on getting a nice used 348 gts or speciale, but the new boxster S is in the same price range, and I don't know which one i would pick. I know the 348 has killer looks, and a beautiful sound, but it's much more expensive to maintain and the performance is basically the same as the boxster. But it's not a new car, but then again neither is my 951.
As far as waving is concerned, I have never seen a wave from a boxster owner. I've seen from many other porsche enthusiasts, but not boxster owners, wierd. It's surprising to me becuase I thought these were the new porsche enthusiasts who can get their hands on new porsche for a good price. Maybe they simply don't know about it.

When I had my 924 in the early 80's, the "wave" was actually a quick opening and closing of the headlights.
Nowadays, I am not much of a flasher or waver in my 993 C4S, but I will tell you that I notice EVERY P-car that I pass or passes me. It's just that here in LA, there are so many P-cars!

Last year I was trying to make the same decision as your dad. I went for the 348, although they are about the same price (1992 -vs- 2002). The 348 has a special occasion feel to it every time you drive it. The Boxster is special, but not quite on par. But the Boxster is a nice car, so I'm toying the idea with replacing my 944 Cab with one....maybe, maybe not.
