My friend and current rennlister (J. Daniels) is looking to get a boxster with a pooched motor and do the 3.4L swap into it.
As Jaak mentioned in the thread not too far below, local dealers want too much money for the motor (15g's), are there any better sources? How reliable are junkyard motors? Can someone else who has done this mod please chime in on what else is required? I'm guessing: - Computers (DME) - Intake Box - Exhaust? Thanks. P.S. Justin you lazy bastard, make your own posts next time. |

I have a 55k 3.4l '99 motor in my garage. Has been inspected by two reputable mechanics and needs one lifter. (found it when doing compression test and one exhaust valve was not closing. Removed valve cover to confirm failed lifter) Will sell it for WAY less than new and can also have dealer mechanic install new lifter and any other work at reasonable cost if desired.

Omar, when I asked if you could help me out, I meant an "off the top of your head" price for a 3.4L motor.
Joe, will the '99 engine work in 2000 Boxster S? I know an e-gas engine in an non e-gas car is a PITA... just wondering if a non e-gas engine in an e-gas car is just as bad. PM me with what you want for the engine as it sits, I can do lifters myself. Thanks for the help. - Justin |

I have no price info on a 3.4l motor, but for anyone looking into doing this type of swap, Todd "tholyoak" on renntech has supplied a great deal of info on all sorts on engine swaps into Boxsters. Google "Boxster 3.4 motor swap" and his name is sure to come up.
There is a Boxster (tip) w/ a blown motor on Pelican for $4,500. No affiliation with the seller it just seemed like a god candidate for a project like this. |

Yep - search here and Renntech. It's not quite as common as "can I turbo my NA" threads on the 944 board but there's been several discussion. If you think you can swap the motor in the Boxster, the 3.4 doesn't add but maybe 1 degree of difficulty. ECU flash, hooking up the changeover flap and the fuel rail are about the only "mandatory" things. Exhaust, intake, and so on are optional activities. Mine's been swapped out for about 6 years now and it's pretty cool. But don't ask me about used engines I had a bad experience.
Cheers Randy

Can't claim to know much about the swap. I had the motor as a spare when I owned my '99 996 so it would have been a direct swap. Three people expressing interest so far, all in Canada. Joe

A few yesr sago there was a guy at a few WGI DEs who supposedly had a 996 motot in his Boxster and did it for $12K.
My mechanic told me that 996 mills used to be around 8K but they doubled over night a few years ago. |
